Bangladesh batsman Soumya Sarkar, who recently made a comeback into the national team during the Asia Cup 2018 faced the axe immediately after that series. He was not picked in the squad that will be playing Zimbabwe at home. In the two ODIs that he featured in this year, the left-hander only scored 33 runs which wasn’t as impressive.

Hence, he was sent back to play for Bangladesh XI to improve on his batting. The side faced Zimbabwe for a practice game at BKSP on Friday and absolutely thrashed the visitors. It was the duo of Soumya Sarkar and Ebadat Hossain who troubled Zimbabwe in the game with an unbeaten 102 and a five-wicket haul respectively.

Sarkar is determined to play for as long as possible

With his epic knock of 102 runs in a chase, Sarkar is trying to prove his mettle to the selectors. However, he said that he wasn’t thinking about scoring runs to get back to the national team. The batsman added that it was just another game for him and wanted to spend as much time as possible in the middle.

“It is not true that I was thinking if I can score runs, it will help me in getting back into the national team. In that regard, there was nothing like (me) feeling relieved. For me, it was just another game and I was looking forward to making the best use of it,” Soumya Sarkar told reporters after the match.

“It could be that it [not thinking too much about the national team] helped me. It is not that I am in good touch, so I was more determined to play for as long as possible at the wicket, and for me enjoying the occasion was more important than anything else,” he further added. Also, he said that he always used to think about the comeback earlier when he was dropped.”Earlier when I was not in the national team, I was always thinking that I have to return back to the national side by scoring runs, but I try to avoid thinking on those lines now,” he concluded.
