The future of Bangladesh cricket looks bright because the team is constituted by young and very talented cricketers the likes of Taskin Ahmed, Sabbir Rahman, Soumya Sarkar, and Mustafizur Rahman. Sarkar, in particular, has shown great promise and it seems that he has been learning a lot about the game and its methods from his opening partner in limited-overs cricket, Tamim Iqbal.

The two have been opening the batting together for the past few years, and Soumya from the other end has constantly witnessed the evolution of Tamim, and how he has carved a niche for himself since the 2015 World Cup. While speaking to media at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB)’s lounge after his fitness training session, Soumya said: “I always learn something or anything from him (Tamim). Even when we two are batting together in the real match situation, I get something to learn from him.”

Of late, Tamim’s partner has not been in the best of forms. But he is optimistic about regaining his form very soon. “I am working on my problems, and looking for the remedies. Hopefully I will be able to do something good next time.” But not just the willow, Soumya Is eager to make it count with the cherry as well. He aims to become a batting all-rounder for the team.

“I do the bowling practice quite often at the nets. If needed, I am ready to support the team with ball in hand,” he stated.

A talent to keep an eye on

Sarkar was an integral part of the Bangladesh team that defeated Pakistan, India and South Africa at home in successive series in 2015-16. He made 497 runs overall in the nine matches in those series’, including three half centuries and an unbeaten ton (133) against Pakistan. With the talent he possesses, he can well be Bangladesh’s go to man in the 2019 ODI World Cup.
