It can be said that Sourav Ganguly is one of the greatest captains India have ever produced. It was under him that the national team went to the final of the 2003 World Cup. Under the leadership of the Bengal cricketer, Team India had learnt to win matches overseas. The fact that he took over after Indian cricket was marred by match-fixing scandals makes his task look commendable.

Few years before the 2007 World Cup, he was dropped, but he made a comeback and played the mega event in the Caribbean. He will always be known as someone, who didn’t drop the gun even in the most adverse situations. Recently, the Prince of Kolkata, as he is popularly known, had another feather added to his hat as he became the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Historic moment for Sourav Ganguly

The news about the development came on Sunday night after a five-hour long meeting at the Trident in Mumbai. It was attended by former BCCI president N Srinivasan and more than 100 guests from different cricketing associations. Union Minister Anurag Thakur put forth Dada’s name after which the decision was made. The official announcement will be on October 23.

Following the news, Ganguly was showered with wishes from every nook and corner of the country. Even Mamata Banerjee, the Honourable Chief Minister of West Bengal, called him the pride of India and Bengal. Ganguly will become the first former Indian skipper after 65 years to become the BCCI president. He will be there for 10 months after which from July 2020, the cooling period starts.

Ganguly is not new to cricket administration as he has twice been appointed as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal. In the meantime, Ganguly’s old picture with current skipper Virat Kohli is doing the rounds on the social media. The picture is from a book launch last year in Kolkata.

The picture has become a meme material where Ganguly was signalling two with his hand to Kohli. The netizens also didn’t miss out on trolling Ravi Shastri, the head coach of the Indian team. After Ganguly’s appointment, fans also wondered what will happen to Shastri.
