South Africa vs England, 2019-20: 3-match ODI series – Statistical Preview

After winning the Test series against South Africa by 3-1 margin, the England team is set for their first ODI assignment since the victorious World Cup campaign. The 3-match ODI series starting on Tuesday will be the first for the Proteas since the CWC 2019 debacle as well. The home side has got a new look to their ODI line-up with Quinton de Kock announced as the captain for the 50-over format. England, on the other hand, rested Ben Stokes for this series while the latest sensation Tom Banton received his maiden ODI call-up.

All the key stats and numbers ahead of the 3-match ODI series between England and South Africa:

1 – Number of ODI and Test matches that South Africa has played since the start of 2007 without any of Faf du Plessis, AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla and Dale Steyn in the playing XI. None of these four players were part of the Kimberley ODI against Zimbabwe in 2018 where JP Duminy led the team.


1 – England has won only one of the four bilateral ODI series they played in South Africa thus far – Won the 3-match ODI series in 2009 by 2-1. During their last tour in 2016, England took 2-0 lead in the 5-match series but lost three straight matches and lost the series as well.


0-5England has lost all the five ODI matches they played against South Africa at the Newlands in Cape Town which will be hosting the first match of this series. They also lost both the completed ODIs at the Durban’s Kingsmead where the 2nd game of the series will be played. The last match will be played at the Wanderers in Johannesburg where the English team lost three of the four ODIs they played against South Africa.


18.11 – Jason Roy has a batting average of 18.11 in ODIs against South Africa; the only opponent against whom he averages less than 25 in this format. (Min: 5 innings) Roy scored 163 runs against the Proteas in nine innings with one fifty which came during the last year’s World Cup opening match.


66.37 – The batting average of Quinton de Kock in the ODI cricket against England; the highest for him against any opponent in this format. (Min: 2 innings) In nine ODIs against them, De Kock scored 531 runs with the help of two hundreds and two fifties.


73.77 – Rassie van der Dussen has a batting average of 73.77 in ODI format. He scored 664 runs across 14 ODI innings with help of seven fifties. Only Navjot Singh Sidhu (8) had more fifty-plus scores in first 14 ODI innings.


554 – Eoin Morgan has aggregated 554 runs in ODI cricket against South Africa; the 3rd most ODI runs for England against South Africa. Only Kevin Pietersen (656) and Graeme Hick (590) scored more runs in ODIs for England against the Proteas.


4907 – Runs Quinton de Kock has scored in his 115-match ODI career. De Kock will be the joint 5th quickest to 5000 ODI runs if he scores 93 more runs in his next inning.
