All the statistical highlights from the 3rd day’s play of the Johannesburg Test match:
A new feat in Test cricket by England:
1 – England became the first team in Test history to have all the 11 players with at least one score of 20+ in the same match. Jos Buttler’s best score in the game was 20 runs in the first inning; the only player to have not recorded a 25+ score in this Test for England.
There have been three instances of 10 players with a 25+ score for a team in a Test before this match; all of them were recorded against the England team. India in the 1981 Delhi Test, Australia during the 1912 Adelaide Test and in the 2011 Sydney Test recorded this feat.
England openers give a good start once again:
2012 – The last instance of England having two opening partnerships of 50+ in the same Test was back in 2012 Mumbai Test against India. Sir Alastair Cook and Nick Compton were England’s opening pair in that match.
De Kock breaks Gilchrist’s record:
45 – Number of matches Quinton de Kock needed to complete 200 dismissals as a wicketkeeper in Test cricket. This makes De Kock the fastest keeper for affecting 200 dismissals in terms of matches bettering Adam Gilchrist’s achievement in 47 Tests.
In fact, Quinton de Kock is also the fastest to 200 keeping dismissals in Test cricket in terms of innings. The South African needed only 84 innings while Gilchrist required 92 innings.
A record-breaking series behind the stumps for De Kock:
23 – Number of dismissals affected by Quinton de Kock in this Test series; the 2nd most number of dismissals for a player in a Test series of four of fewer matches. Adam Gilchrist claimed 25 catches during the 2007/08 Border Gavaskar Trophy at home.
Maiden 5-fer for Hendricks:
1993 – Beuran Hendricks became the first left-arm pacer to take a 5-wicket haul in Test cricket for South Africa in more than 26 years. The last to do so was Brett Schultz who had figures of 5/63 in Sri Lanka’s first inning during the 1993 Colombo-PSS Test.
Between these two 5-fers, only twice any left-arm quick claimed a 5-wicket haul in International cricket. Wayne Parnell had two 5-fers in the ODI format in 2009 during the home ODI matches.
