India put themselves in a convincing position in the Johannesburg Test thanks to a brilliant bowling display from their bowlers who restricted South Africa to 194 after they were bowled out for 187. Hashim Amla was the home side’s standout performer who got support from Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander. Jasprit Bumrah with his maiden five-fer and Bhuvneshwar Kumar cleaned up the Saffers. India ended the day strongly with 43/1 on the board in their 2nd innings.

0 – Number of balls bowled by the spinners in the first two innings of this Test match. Since 1996, this is only the 2nd Test match where spinners didn’t even bowl a ball in the first two innings of a Test. The Johannesburg Test in 2006 between South Africa and New Zealand also didn’t have a ball bowled by the spinners in the first two innings.
9 – The nine wides conceded by India in South Africa’s first innings are the joint most conceded by them in a Test innings since 2011. India conceded nine wides in the first innings of the 2014 Adelaide Test against Australia.
14 – As many as 14 batsmen dismissed for single digits in the first two innings of this Test match which are the joint most in a Test in the last 30 years. The last Test match with 14 such dismissals in the first two innings was the 2011 Cape Town Test between South Africa-Australia.
34 – A total of 34 catches were taken by the wicketkeepers in this Test series so far. These are the most number of catches by keepers in a 3-match Test series. The South Africa-Sri Lanka Test series in 2016/17 witnesses 33 catches taken by the keepers which was the previous most.
53 – Parthiv Patel’s batting average of 53 is the 2nd best for a specialist wicketkeeper while opening the batting in Test cricket. (Min: 5 innings) Pakistan’s Taslim Arif averages 60.83 as an opener while playing as a specialist keeper.
5/54 – Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling figures of 5/54 are the 3rd best bowling figures in Test cricket for an Indian pacer in South Africa. Javagal Srinath took 6/76 in the 2001 Port Elizabeth Test match while Sreesanth took 5/40 in the 2006 Johannesburg Test.
200 – With the wicket of Vernon Philander, Mohammed Shami completed 200 wickets in his first-class career. Shami completed 100 Test wickets in the previous game. Jasprit Bumrah also completed 100 FC wickets with help of Andile Phehlukwayo’s wicket.
