Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera threatens to dissolve Sri Lankan cricket board
"Give me a little time to resurrect things. I will not hesitate even to dissolve the cricket board if it takes to that." - SL Sports Minister.
Sri Lankan cricket looks to be a passing through a tough phase, and the results speak for itself. From failed captaincy to poor match tactics, the Islanders have failed to capitalize on any opportunity on their tours. Sri Lanka has hardly succeeded in winning matches in 2017 and has a win-loss record of 4-21 in ODIs. Sri Lanka, who is currently playing a bilateral tour in India, has seen a drastic drop in its international standings with the team suffering consecutive losses in all three formats.
However, the problems have now crept within the management as well. After stopping Sri Lanka’s ODI squad from traveling to India, Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera on Wednesday said he would go to the extent of dissolving the present Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) administration to restore the national team’s fortune. The country has witnessed a disappointing season of cricket and the current administration has been blamed for the team’s poor run in international cricket.
The present voting system has promoted buying of votes by the country’s top businessmen
Jayasekera also aims to reduce the number of votes at SLC election through constitutional reforms. It has been alleged that the present voting system has promoted buying of votes at SLC elections by the country’s top businessmen who want to enjoy the plum of heading the island’s most prestigious governing body.
Referring to the poor show by Sri Lankan cricket team, Jayasekera said according to Indian Express, “Give me a little time to resurrect things. I will not hesitate even to dissolve the cricket board if it takes to that.”
Speaking about reducing the number of votes, Jayasekara said, “I want to see it reduced to 75 from the present 140.I can’t politically interfere and appoint interim committees. But I am keen to see improvement in the local set up”
He added, “The current Tier 1 and 2 will be amalgamated in a new provincial cricket set up.”
