SRH’s first-ever playing XI in IPL: Where are they now?

The Indian Premier League has unbelievably leaped its presence and is the most celebrated sporting aspect of the country. It has seen plenty of teams representing the various parts of India since its inception in 2008. The team which first represented the “City of Pearls – Hyderabad” was the Deccan Chargers. They were in the IPL from the inaugural edition and were also the title-winner in the second season of the IPL. The team was terminated in 2012 due to financial reasons. The franchise was then bought by the Sun group and renamed the team as Sunrisers Hyderabad. The team played their inaugural match in 2013 against the Pune Warriors and won the match. The team had many star players who represented the side. In the article, let us get down the memory lane to check the first-ever playing eleven of SRH and about their present whereabouts 1. Akshath Reddy Akshath Reddy. (Photo Source: NOAH SEELAM/AFP/GettyImages) Akshath Reddy is an opening batter from the state of Hyderabad. His impressive domestic record earned him a place in the 2012’s Deccan chargers side and he was named in the Sunrisers’ squad for their team’s inaugural edition. This 30-year-old batter opened the innings along with Parthiv Patel and made a calm 30-ball 27 in the first match. He has played a total of 12 IPL matches and has 164 runs to his name. Reddy was then dropped from the team and eventually did not participate thereafter. He is still the opening batter of the Hyderabad side in the List A matches and has over five thousand first-class runs. 2. (Photo by IANS) Parthiv Patel, the Indian player, was the opening batter and the wicket-keeper of the newly formed team of Sunrisers Hyderabad. He was a part of three teams since the inaugural IPL and he was retained by SRH from Deccan Chargers after its termination. The left-handed batter was bowled in by Ashok Dinda for 19 runs in the first match. He played the whole season for them and hit 294 runs at a strike rate of 115.29. The “pocket dynamo” as he is called fondly, played the IPL last in 2019 and retired from all forms of cricket in 2020 at an age of 35. He holds the position of a talent scout for the Mumbai Indians side and is a commentator in the Hindi panel of Star Sports. 3. Kumar Sangakkara (Captain) Kumar Sangakkara. (Photo by Nigel Roddis/Getty Images) The Sri Lankan cricketing legend – Kumar Sangakkara – was the first captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Since he was the captain of the Deccan Chargers side, he was directly posted as the skipper in SRH too. The southpaw managed to score just 15 runs in the first match but made the team win by 22 runs using his captaincy skills. He culminated his IPL career in 2013 in SRH’s attire after playing 71 matches and has 1687 runs with ten fifties. Sangakkara was appointed as the President of the MCC in 2019. He was the first non-British member to hold the post. He contributes to the sport in all the ways he could, as he is also a commentator. In 2021, he was named as the Director of Cricket of Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. 4. He debuted in the IPL in 2008 for Royal Challengers Bangalore and after playing three seasons, he was bought by Deccan Chargers. He was then the second-highest-paid Aussie cricketer in the IPL after David Hussey. White was the vice-captain of the side and captained the team in the absence of Kumar Sangakkara. He was then retained by the Sunrisers side for 2013 and was made the captain of the team after dropping Sangakkara. This Aussie has played 47 IPL games and has hit 954 with a strike rate of 126.36. After his poor streak of runs and inability to score quick runs, White was dropped from the team and did not play an IPL match after 2013. In 2020, he announced his retirement from professional cricket. 5. Thisara Perera Tamim Iqbal. (Photo Source: Twitter) The famous Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera was a part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise in 2013. He made his debut in the IPL in 2010 for Chennai Super Kings and after playing for Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Mumbai Indians, he was bought by SRH to fill in the vacant all-rounder slot. Perera was the highest run-getter of the first match for SRH with 30 runs in 18 balls which included three fours and a six. With the ball, he also took two wickets giving away just 29 runs in four overs. He played a crucial part of the match-winning side. In total, he played 37 IPL matches and has hit 422 runs with 31 wickets to his tally. This 32-year-old player played his last IPL match for Pune Supergiant in 2016. He recently retired from all the formats of international cricket, but he has been playing the other domestic leagues over the world. 6. Hanuma Vihari Hanuma Vihari. (Photo: IANS) A revelation player to feature on this list is Hanuma Vihari. The batter, who is much known for the longest format of the game, played for Sunrisers in their inaugural season in 2013. He hails from Hyderabad and is quite a popular name in the domestic circuit of the city. Owing to his records in the home ground, he was picked by the SRH franchise and debuted in the first match of the team against the Pune Warriors. He played all seventeen matches for the team and scored just 241 runs at a strike rate of below ninety. This Hyderabad cricketer was then dropped for the next year and he played his last IPL match in 2019. His under-strike rate and performances couldn’t fetch him a stable position in the IPL. Vihari is still applying for the auction but the franchises are reluctant to pick him as he is now an established Test cricketer. Also, he is now a middle-order batter of the Indian Test side. 7. Ashish Reddy Ashish Reddy. (Photo source: Twitter) Ashish Reddy is an all-rounder from the soil of Hyderabad. He is a right-handed batter and right-arm medium pace bowler. After becoming the side’s highest wicket-taker in the domestic season 2012-13, he was called forward to represent Deccan Chargers in 2012. Reddy played some matches for the side and after disbanding the team, his contract was then renewed for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013. He only played a few matches that season as he sustained an injury. On playing 31 IPL matches, he scored 280 runs at a strike rate of 145.08, and with the ball, he picked 18 wickets at an economy of 9.07. He was then retained by the side till 2016, as he played his last match against RCB. He was then obscured and played some domestic matches. 8. Dwaraka Ravi Teja Dwaraka Ravi Teja. (Photo source: Instagram) Dwaraka Ravi Teja is a right-handed opening batter of the Andhra Pradesh domestic team. He made his IPL debut for Deccan Chargers in 2008 against Kings XI Punjab. Teja then continued his journey with Sunrisers Hyderabad. Although he is an opening order batter by position, he was made to bat at number eight in the first match against Pune where he just scored four runs. His IPL career stats lies at 375 runs in 32 matches with his highest score of 60. He did not feature in the IPL after 2013 and now plays for the Meghalaya side in first-class cricket. 9. Amit Mishra Amit Mishra. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The classical leggie Amit Mishra was the lead spinner in the side for the inaugural match of SRH. He is an attacking bowler who could spin the ball widely. Mishra is the highest hat-trick holder in the IPL with three hat-tricks to his name. Mishra first played for Delhi Daredevils in 2008 and continued until 2010. He was then bought by Deccan Chargers in 2011 and represented the team till its termination and was directly transferred to the Sunrisers Hyderabad. This 39-year-old spinner then played the first match for SRH in 2013 and grabbed three wickets for just 19 runs and bagged the man-of-the-match award. He also took his third hat-trick in a match against the same opposition and became the first to pick three hat-tricks. He was then bought by Delhi and has been representing the team since then. 10. Dale Steyn Dale Steyn. (Photo Source: Twitter) The childhood hero of the early twenties’ kids – Dale Steyn represented the Sunrisers Hyderabad for three years – 2013, 14, and 15. He debuted in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2008 and was signed by Deccan Chargers in 2011. The “Steyn-Gun” was one of the most aggressive bowlers of his generation and was a much-demanded IPL player. He picked up three wickets with an economy of 2.86 in the first match for SRH and aided the team to their victory. This Proteas pacer has played 95 IPL matches and has taken 96 wickets with a career economy of 6.91. His performance started deteriorating and he eventually couldn’t create much impact in this league. He last played an IPL match for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2020. A few months back, he declared his retirement and now is a part of the commentary team. 11. Ishant Sharma Ishant Sharma. (Photo Source: Twitter) Ishant Sharma, the tall Indian speedster from Delhi, was the other pacer who partnered with Dale Steyn in the first match of SRH against Pune Warriors India. He played in the IPL for the first time in 2008 for Kolkata Knight Riders. In 2011, he was signed by Deccan Chargers and eventually played for SRH after the team’s exclusion. He played till 2015 for Sunrisers and was a decent contributor to the team. In the first match of SRH, he bowled four overs and gave away just 22 runs. This 33-year-old pacer has taken part in 93 IPL matches and has grabbed 72 wickets at an economy of 8.12. He was a part of the Delhi Capitals’ side and played three matches in the 2021 IPL. He is seen more as a Test bowler and as he hasn’t been able to show much in the shortest format, he is still used as a backup.
