Sri Lanka keen on playing against India, Pakistan to promote climatic awareness

The recent Seventh South Asian Conference on Sanitation held at Islamabad has surprisingly come up with the prospect of some more cricket matches to be played among the Asian countries. The meeting saw the Minister of Urban Development, Water Supply and Drainage of Sri Lanka Abdul Rauff Hibbathul Hakim speak to the Federal Minister for Climate Change Senator Mushahidullah Khan to discuss opportunities for mutual cooperation on water and climate change.

Over 700 other international and national delegates from 8 other South Asian nations attended the conference in Islamabad. At the meeting, the officials of Pakistan and Sri Lanka had a long discussion about how the two countries can work together to battle the ever increasing climatic change concerns.

Mushahidullah Khan remarked that Sri Lanka and Pakistan are two nations who have least contribution in global carbon emission. However, they still face the crisis that emerges due to the climatic changes. The two nations agreed to work together to form international forums that would discuss the plans to spread awareness on the issue.

Green Climate Match

Among the various plans onboard, he proposed the idea of organizing “Green Climate Match” between the two countries to spread public awareness. The popularity of cricket in both the nations is well known to all. Commenting on the idea, as per the reports in PakObserver, Minister of Urban Development, Water Supply and Drainage of Sri Lanka Abdul Rauff Hibbathul Hakim appreciated the plan of having green matches.

He even added a third team to the proposed plan, team India in the discussions for the awareness matches. Whether the match goes underway or not, remains to be seen. While India and Pakistan have been playing against Sri Lanka at regular basis, the cricketing ties between India and Pakistan stand severed. The two nations only face off in ICC or ACC events. The recent announcement of the Asia Cup 2018 has come as a big news for the fans of the Indo-Pak cricketing rivalry.
