Sri Lanka predicted XI for Asia Cup 2022
The tournament begins with Sri Lanka challenging Afghanistan on 27th of August.
Over a period of the last two years, Sri Lankan cricketers have proved that they can be a really dangerous side if the conditions suit them. After the retirement of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena, people wrote them off completely. However, the new bunch of cricketers are not just exciting prospects but also doing damage all across the globe in various T20 leagues. Before challenging Afghanistan in the opening match of the tournament, the question remains – Can this set of players surprise everyone and help Sri Lanka win their 6th Asia Cup in history? Let’s dissect –
Pathum Nissanka and Danushka Gunathilaka are expected to open the innings for the Lankans. The duo is not known for quick runs, but they can give Sri Lanka a very steady start. Charith Asalanka, at number three, can clear the ropes but can anchor the innings in case of a few quick wickets.
Kusal Mendis at number four and Bhanuka Rajapaksa at five will have the liberty of playing aggressive cricket. Rajapaksa’s consistency is a matter of discussion, but he can give good starts. Captaining the side, Dasun Shanaka is like Dinesh Karthik of Sri Lanka. He times the ball really well and clears the ropes pretty easily. However, he rarely gets to display his skill as Sri Lanka is known to crumble under pressure these days.
Wanindu Hasaranga is the poster boy of Sri Lankan cricket at the moment. Representing Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, the 25-year-old picked 26 wickets in the last season. He can be a dangerous bowler on UAE pitches, but he will have to strengthen his batting skill as well. He has been very inconsistent for Sri Lanka while batting, and that needs to change immediately for the country to finish well. With Shanka by his side, he can redefine finishing in T20 cricket.
Dushmantha Chameera’s injury is a big blow to the Lankans. Chamika Karunaratne will have to take the added responsibility in the tournament. He can contribute with the bat as well, and that will be a boost for their lower middle order. Meanwhile, Nuwan Thushara is expected to replace the injured Chameera in the squad.
19-year-old Matheesa Pathirana will be an important bowler for the project. Known as the ‘baby Malinga’, Pathirana can be a surprise package in the tournament. Maheesh Theeksana, the right-arm off-spinner, will complete the side.
