Stats: Chris Gayle completes 100 ODI sixes in the West Indies
Gayle also became the joint highest six hitter in ODI cricket.
Chris Gayle is determined to help his West Indies team succeed in the ODI format after they failed to qualify to for the Champions Trophy in 2017. He returned to the ODI set up earlier this year and featured in the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe to help the Caribbean team qualify for the 10-team ODI World Cup to be played in 2019. He had decent outings with the bat in the just concluded 3-match ODI series at home against Bangladesh as he scored 142 runs.
Gayle produced a 66-ball 73-run knock with six fours and five sixes in the series decider as his team was chasing 302 runs. But a middle-order struggle let his efforts down the drain. His first six of the game was in the 6th over when he hit one straight over Mehidy Hasan’s head. With the help of that maximum, Gayle surpassed Sanath Jayasuriya’s tally of 270 sixes in the ODI format. He had levelled the Sri Lankan with a six he hit in the 2nd ODI and a couple in the first match.

The left-hander later smashed the Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza over extra cover in the 9th over to complete 100 sixes in the ODI format on the Caribbean soil. Thus, Gayle became the first Windies player to hit 100 ODI sixes in a country and also the first player to 100 ODI sixes in the Caribbean. He became only the 4th player to hit a 100 sixes in the ODI format at home. Shahid Afridi hit 86 sixes in 86 ODI innings in the UAE including the ODI tournaments he played in that country.
Gayle joined the likes of Brendon McCullum, MS Dhoni and Martin Guptill who hit 100 ODI sixes at home. With the 5th and last six of the game, he levelled Afridi’s record for most number of sixes in International cricket. Both the players have hit 476 sixes apiece across all the three International formats.
