Stats: Fastest fifties in the ICC ODI tournament finals

While the Indians put on a disappointing batting performance in the big final against Pakistan, Hardik Pandya stood out with some sparkling hitting as he scored 76 off just 43 balls with 4 fours and 6 mighty sixes. However, his cameo innings came to an end after an absolutely frustrating mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja.

Pandya who was striking the ball really well brought up his fifty in just 32 balls with his 4th six of the innings and broke the record for the fastest fifty in an ICC ODI event final. The previous record was held by Adam Gilchrist, who also scored it against Pakistan in the ICC World Cup 1999 final at the Lord’s however, he ended up on the winning side.

The fastest fifty in a Champions Trophy final was hit less than two hours before Pandya broke it as Mohammad Hafeez needed only 34 balls for his fifty to power his side to a total of 338 runs. In the top 5 fastest fifties in the ICC ODI tournament finals, Gilchrist occupies the top three lists as he hit a 40-ball fifty in the 2003 World Cup over India and followed it with a 43-ball fifty in the next World Cup final, in 2007 against Sri Lanka.

Before this CT final, the top three fastest fifties in the ICC ODI tournament finals were with Gilchrist but cameos from Pandya and Hafeez changed things. West Indies’ Collis King scored 86 from just 66 balls against England in the 1979 finals, however, the data for balls taken by him for his fifty wasn’t available back then.
