Stats: Highest scores by Indian players before missing a Test
Indian middle-order batsman Karun Nair scored a brilliant triple century against England in the 5th Test match in Chennai. He became only the second Indian to do that after Virender Sehwag. Karun not only helped India surpass the massive total England had put up but also gave his team a hefty lead. Even after achieving this feat, the youngster has lost his place to Ajinkya Rahane for the Test against Bangladesh.
This is not the first time this has happened, there have been instances before where Indian players have missed the following game after a once in a lifetime performance. Karun is the latest example while Vinoo Mankad is the oldest. Vinoo played an extraordinary inning against New Zealand in 1955, scoring a double century; India won that match by an innings. However, he didn’t play the next Test.
Ravi Shashtri also features in the list. India tour of Australia back in 1992, the then Indian opener smacked Australia for a double century and then went on to miss the next game. Gautam Gambhir also makes it to the list. He scored a magnificent double century alongside VVS Laxman but went on to miss the next game. He was banned for the following game as he elbowed Shane Watson during the 3rd Test.
Here is the list of Indian players who missed the next Test after scoring big:
Player | Score in the previous Test |
Karun Nair | 303* |
Vinoo Mankand | 223 |
Ravi Shastri | 206 |

There are also players who missed the following matches after scoring a triple century. Karun again is the latest but there are others as well. The former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq makes it to the scarcely populated list. Inzamam tormented the New Zealand bowlers throughout his innings as he ended up with a 329 to his name. Anyhow, Inzy missed the next game.
