Pakistan and Sri Lanka defeating South Africa and India respectively on successive days set the Champions Trophy’s Group B on fire as only one of the two tournament favourites India and South Africa will be moving ahead except in an unlikely event of washouts in remaining league games.

The game between India and South Africa, which was already expected to be a cracker, will be gaining a larger significance with it being a virtual quarter-final before the semi-finals for both the teams. Every time the topic about knockout comes up, most cricket fans and South African fans get nervous about the team, given their abysmal record in the big games and their record of bottling up from winning positions and of course, their never ending love story with rain which turns up in high profile games.

Though India has a superior record in knockout matches in the ICC ODI events, their record in overall knockout games in the ODI format is similar to that of South Africa. India defeated South Africa in both the knockout games they played in ICC events while South Africa are level on 4 wins with them in overall knockout games in the 50-over format.

India and South Africa’s records in knockout games in the ICC events:

Talking only about the virtual knockouts, India and South Africa have played in such game 7 and 8 times respectively in the ICC ODI tournaments. Out of the 7, India won 3 of those and lost 4. The losses include the last three occasions they faced a virtual knockout situation – the 2004 and 2006 Champions Trophy and the 2007 World Cup.

South Africa, on the other hand, has won 4 and lost 2 out the 8 virtual knockouts they played in the ICC ODI events. The remaining two games of Saffers ended in a tie based on Duckworth-Lewis method with one game earning them a favourable result. Looking at their records and the history of both sides, it will be tough to vary the teams depending on their reputation.
