Stats: Jasprit Bumrah claims hat-trick on his way to yet another 5-wicket haul

Jasprit Bumrah resumed it in Kingston where he left it in Antigua as the speedster claimed another 5-wicket haul in Test match cricket. The No.7 ranked Test bowler also recorded a hat-trick on his way through to a 6-wicket haul. India finished their first innings on 416 after Hanuma Vihari scored his maiden Test ton while Ishant Sharma got his maiden Test half-century. Bumrah gave the first breakthrough for India in the 7th over when John Campbell was caught behind.

In his very next over, Darren Bravo was caught in the slips while Shamarh Brooks, on the very next ball, was trapped in front. Bumrah broke through the defence of Roston Chase on the hat-trick ball but the umpire turned down his LBW appeal. The pacer didn’t seem confident and was hesitant to take the review. However, skipper Virat Kohli went with his gut feeling and got Chase dismissed also for a golden duck.

Thus, Japsrit Bumrah claimed his maiden hat-trick. In doing so, he became only the 3rd Indian to take a hat-trick in Test cricket. Harbhajan Singh became the first in 2001 against Australia when he dismissed the likes of Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist and Shane Warne with consecutive deliveries in the first innings of the game. Irfan Pathan recorded a rarest of hat-tricks when they toured Pakistan in 2006.

Hat-tricks for India in Test cricket:

The left-arm pacer completed a hat-trick by end of the first over itself during the Karachi Test. Bumrah’s hunger did not stop with the rare achievement as Kraigg Brathwaite turned out to be his 5th scalp. Bumrah had bowled only 35 balls by the time of that wicket; the 4th fastest known 5-wicket Test haul recorded by an Indian. Bumrah’s bowling figures were reading 6.1-1-12-5 when he picked up a calf strain and left the field.

The 25-year-old was fit to resume in the last 30 minutes of the day’s play and didn’t look long to strike again. The West Indies skipper Jason Holder top-edged the first ball Bumrah bowled after coming on to the field. He ended the 2nd day with figures of 9.1-3-16-6 as the hosts were reduced to 87/7. Starting from the 4th day in Antigua, Bumrah’s collective bowling figures currently read 17.1-6-23-11.
