Stats: Jonny Bairstow completes 2000 runs in ODI cricket
The Yorkshire batsman has amassed 1366 runs in 27 ODI innings as an opener with six centuries.
Jonny Bairstow has turned out to be a beast in the ODI format ever since he was promoted as an opener by England in 2017. The Yorkshire batsman has amassed 1366 runs in 27 ODI innings as an opener with six centuries at an average of 56.92 and a strike-rate of 113.08. No player in ODI cricket has scored more runs than Bairstow as an opener at a better average or better S/R. In the ongoing second ODI game against Sri Lanka, the opening batsman reached a couple of milestone in this format.
When Bairstow reached his individual score of five, he completed 1000 runs in the ODI format in 2018. He is the first player to score 1000 ODI runs this year. Not many players in the past have managed to score 1000 ODI runs in a calendar year for England. Only five players before Bairstow have achieved this feat thus far with Jonathan Trott in 2011 being the last. The former England International aggregated 1315 runs in just 29 matches in that year.
1000+ runs in ODI cricket in a calendar year for England:
Bairstow is also only the second England opener to score 1000 ODI runs in a calendar year. All the 1021 runs Bairstow scored in 2018 have been as an opener. Chris Broad, in 1987, scored 1047 runs in 26 ODIs while opening the innings for England. With three more matches left in 2018, Bairstow could well move to the second spot in the list of most ODI runs scored in a calendar year for England.
Bairstow also completed 2000 runs in this format when he reached 13. The opener got to the milestone in only 49 innings which is bettered by only seven players. The record is held by Hashim Amla in 40 innings; five less than the next best. The second spot is shared by as many as five players who completed this milestone in 45 innings. Among England players, only Kevin Pietersen (45) and Jonathan Trott (47) have taken fewer innings to 2000 ODI runs than Bairstow.
