Stats: List of players stranded at 99* in Test cricket

Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq became the sixth batsman in cricket history to be stranded at the score of 99 when the rest of the team got out on the other end of the pitch in the longest form of the game. The unlucky ’90’ as they call it in the game has struck the Pakistani captain now and has taken 48 years to hit the captain after it struck the England batsman Geoff Boycott.

The English legend Boycott faced the Australian team in the Ashes at their oppositions’ home turf at Perth in the year 1979. The Western Australia Cricket Association ground was deemed unlucky as the Australia batsman Steve Waugh was stranded on the same score after a terrible mix-up with his brother Mark Waugh, who was the runner for the injured fast bowler Craig McDermott.

The third player to feature on this unlucky list is the Englishmen Alex Tudor, who’s highest score till date remains 99*. The right-arm English quick walked in as the night-watchman against the South African side at Edgbaston in the year 1999.

Then, it was the famous South African all-rounder, who’s fame came in after a string of incredible bowling performances against the Aussies. Shaul Pollock who features in the list, walked into bat at No.8 ended the innings at 99*, he ran out of partners at the other end after the dismissal of the wicketkeeper-batsman Mark Boucher.

Fellow South African Andrew Hall was the last player to feature on the list before Misbah. The all-rounder led the team from 232/7 against the English side to a respectable total of 365 runs, which proved decisive going into the last inning of the Test at Headingley.

Misbah-ul-Haq rounded the list with a very fine knock of 99 after a pathetic end to their previous day’s play. The Pakistani batsman was stranded at the non-striker’s end when Mohammad Abbas was beaten by a sharp delivery from Roston Chase to close out the innings at 407 all out.

Pakistani captain was looking all geared up to go past his record and to become the oldest centurion as captain in the longest form of cricket but debutant Mohammad Abbas was out lbw.
