Stats: Most 600 plus total under a skipper in Test cricket

Team India scaled the 600+ total twice in two games in the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka as they declared the innings after posting 622/9 in their first knock at Colombo (SSC). This was the 6th time India have posted 600+ in Test cricket since December 2016. Since February 2016 Australia is the only other team that has posted a 600+ total. Prior to these 6 totals of over 600+, the Indian team last scored that big a total back in 2011.

All these six 600+ totals for the Indian team have come under Virat Kohli’s captaincy. No other captain in Test history has witnessed as many as six totals of 600+ under their tenure. Four players including two from India have had 5 totals of 600 and more recorded during their tenure as captain. Kohli, who is acting as captain in his 28th Test has captained in 20 fewer games than the captains who have five 600+ totals during their period.

For India, five captains including Virat Kohli have had four and more 600+ totals in Test cricket. India scored 600+ totals four times during Anil Kumble’s time as the captain in just 14 Test matches. From among the previous five 600+ totals that were registered under Kohli, India won four times, while the Ranchi Test against Australia ended in a draw.
