Mumbai tried their best to see themselves through to the semi-final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019/20 as they posted a huge total of 243/3 against Punjab. Prithvi Shaw gave the start that Mumbai needed as he scored a 27-ball 53. Later captain Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer scored 80 runs apiece and shared a 140-run stand in only 10.3 overs. The Mumbai team needed to restrict Punjab to as low as 150 to go past Karnataka’s NRR.

However, Punjab’s top-order were in a mood to chase down the target itself. Shubman Gill was the chief destroyer in Punjab’s innings scoring a 38-ball 78. Abhishek Sharma (47 off 29) and Gurkeerat Singh (40 off 21) shared 70+ stands for the first two wickets with Gill. Punjab brought down the equation to 69 from 29 balls. However, once Shubman got out in the 16th over, Punjab found no chance in the chase.

All the statistical highlights from the high-scoring match between Mumbai and Punjab:

5 – Mumbai’s innings is only the 5th instance of three players scoring fifties in an innings of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy. Andhra had three half-centurions when they faced Goa and Manipur in 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons respectively. In the ongoing edition, Madhya Pradesh and Saurashtra also had three players scoring fifties in the matches against Meghalaya and Goa respectively.

25 – As many as 25 sixes were hit by both the teams in the game played on Wednesday night – 13 by Mumbai and 12 by Punjab. These are the most number of sixes hit during a Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy match. The previous most were 24 maximums in the 2018/19 season game between Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir. The same number of sixes were hit during this season’s match between Karnataka and Services.

221/6 – Punjab’s total of 221/6 is now the highest total in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy while chasing for any team. Previous highest total during a chase in SMA T20 Trophy was 214/6 by Delhi in the 2015/16 season match hosted by Vadodara while chasing a target of 211 against Railways. This is also the highest T20 total for Punjab surpassing the 211/4 they posted against Himachal in 2017/18.

221/6 – Mumbai conceded the total of 221/6 by bowling only five bowlers. This total is now the highest conceded in SMA T20 Trophy where a team needed only five bowlers for bowling 20 overs. The 205/7 by Tamil Nadu against Karnataka in the 2010/11 season is the previous highest such score in the history of the competition.

243/3 – The total of 243/3 by Mumbai is now their 2nd highest total in the Twenty20 format and also the 6th highest by any side in the SMA T20 Trophy. This is also the highest total that Punjab has conceded in this format. Maharashtra posted 201/4 in the Group Stage of this tournament which was the first time Punjab conceded a 200+ total.

464 – A total of 464 runs have been scored by both the teams in this match; the highest-aggregated match in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The previous highest aggregated match in this competition was the 2017/18 season game between Delhi and Services at Arun Jaitley Stadium where 428 runs were scored. Delhi posted 225/8 in 20 overs while Services were bowled out for 203 in 19.1 overs.

464 – The 464 runs also make up for the 3rd highest aggregated Twenty20 match on Indian soil. The last year’s T20I between Afghanistan and Ireland held in Dehradun recorded a total of 472 runs for the loss of only nine wickets while the 2010 IPL match hosted by Chennai between CSK and RR witnessed a total of 469 runs.
