Stats: Pakistan team’s record in tournament finals

Coming into the tournament without a lot of expectations, Pakistan have made it to the final of the Champions Trophy 2017 by beating the hot favourites South Africa and England comprehensively. They will now face arch-rivals India in their first ever final in the Champions Trophy and their first appearance in an ICC event final since winning the 2009 World T20.

In fact, Pakistan have never made it to the final of an ICC ODI tournament since finishing as runners in the 1999 World Cup. Though they have been in the semi-finals 14 times in ICC events; the joint most by any team along with Australia and India, but have qualified for the final only 5 times while Australia and India have made it to the finale 10 and 9 occasions respectively.

The Green Army has a decent record while playing in the finals as they have won 21 ODI tournament out of the 46 in which they made it to the final. However, they finished runner-ups in 24 tourneys while rain saved them from losing one final.

While Pakistan’s record against India in ICC events can scare them, but their record over their rival side in the tournament finals would give them some comfort. Pakistan lost to India in 13 (including a tie) out of the 15 games played in the ICC events one of them being the World T20 finals. However, in the ODI tournament, Pakistani team has got better of India to win 6 titles out of the 8 they were title contenders for.
