Stats: Prithvi Shaw hits 100 on Test debut against Windies

Prithvi Shaw is having a great 2018 and he continues to make it memorable. On Thursday, the 18-year-old batsman made a dream debut in Tests by slamming a hundred against the Windies in Rajkot and made it a perfect three with his debut tons in his Ranji and Duleep Trophy careers as well. Shaw was having a ball as his century came at better than run-a-delivery as India cruised to a big total against the Caribbeans after Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat.

Shaw 4th youngest to hit Test ton on debut

Shaw, whose ton came with a cover stroke in the 33rd over of the day, also made a couple of other records. He became the fourth youngest to score a hundred in Tests at the age of 18 years and 329 days which puts him just behind Bangladesh’s Mohammad Ashraful (17 years and 61 days), Zimbabwe’s Hamilton Masakadza (17 years and 352 days) and Pakistan’s Saleem Malik (18 years and 323 days). The next two in the list are Mohammad Wasim (19 years and 105 days) and Javed Miandad (19 years and 119 days) which means five of the top six youngest debut ton scorers in Tests are from Asia.

Shaw second youngest opener to hit a Test ton

Shaw did even two steps better in terms of the youngest opener to score a Test century. Only Imran Nazir of Pakistan was ahead of him at 18 years and 154 days though he hit a century in his third innings. The other three in the top 5 list are Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi (18 years and 333 days) and Mohammad Ilyas (19 years and 21 days) and Bangladesh’s Nafees Iqbal (19 years and 75 days). Of these players, Afridi’s 141 scored against India in Chennai in 1999 is the highest. Can Shaw better that?

India lost their first wicket in the very first over in the form of KL Rahul who failed to open his account. However, it has been all Shaw and Cheteshwar Pujara who eventually put up 203 runs in just 42 overs. Shaw was earlier picked for the last two Tests in England but did not get to play. Eventually, his chance came and he grabbed it with both hands.
