One of the finest New Zealand batters Ross Taylor bid adieu to international cricket as he stepped out on to the field for one final time against the Netherlands in the third ODI at Seddon Park in Hamilton. Nicknamed ‘Rosco’, Taylor made his debut for New Zealand on March 01, 2006, against West Indies in an ODI in Napier. After serving the nation for 16 long years, Taylor hung up his boots to go down as one of the greatest Kiwi players.
The 38-year-old Taylor was the mainstay in New Zealand’s batting line-up ever since making his debut. He was the vital cog at number four position for the BlackCaps in both Tests and ODIs. He appeared in four 50-over World Cups for his country with New Zealand reaching the semi-finals and finals twice each. The right-handed batter also contested in six T20 World Cups from 2007 to 2016.
The ODI against the Netherlands was his 450th international match as he ended his career with a special feat. The Kiwi legend played his last Test match against Bangladesh in Christchurch in January this year.
Ross Taylor is the only player in the cricketing world to feature in over 100 matches in all three formats. He played 112 Test matches in which he amassed 7683 runs with 19 centuries and 35 fifties at an average of 44.66. His highest score of 290 runs against Australia in Perth in 2015 is still the best Test score by a visiting batter against Australia Down Under.
Known for his power-hitting on the leg side, Taylor scored 8607 runs with 21 centuries and 51 fifties in 236 ODIs. He ended his glorious career as the highest run-scorer for New Zealand in both Test and 50-overs format. The veteran Kiwi also amassed 1909 runs in 102 T20 internationals with seven half-centuries.
With over 15000 runs across formats for NZ, Taylor achieved many records during his fabulous career. The classy Kiwi batter scored an unbeaten 47 runs and hit the winning boundary to win the inaugural World Test Championship for NZ against India in June 2021.
