Stats: RR and CSK script the record of hitting joint-most sixes in an IPL game
After being put to bat first, RR were bolstered by Sanju Samson's batting carnage.
Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings locked horns in the fourth match of this year’s Indian Premier League at Sharjah. The high-octane encounter was filled with individual batting performances where multiple batsmen smoked sixes for fun. In the end, Steve Smith and his troops clinched their opening IPL 2020 fixture by 16 runs.
After being put to bat first, RR were bolstered by Sanju Samson’s batting carnage. The Kerala stalwart unleashed his potential and slammed a rampage of 32-ball 74. In his blistering knock, he slammed 9 steep sixes. He was also assisted by captain Smith, who hit 4 sixes during his 69-run knock.
In the end, England speedster Jofra Archer also joined the party by slamming 4 sixes in his quick-fire 27-run cameo. Fans also witnessed several sixes in the second innings too. Shane Watson initially mustered 4 sixes but didn’t manage to convert his knock into a big one. The Australian departed on 33 runs and left the stage for Faf du Plessis’ performance.
Faf du Plessis almost won the game for CSK with his 72-run knock
The South African stalwart almost pulled off a heroic triumph for CSK. In his impressive 72-run knock, he hit 7 sixes before getting out in the penultimate over. CSK needed 38 to win from the last over and it was technically an impractical task for the Yellow Army. But skipper Dhoni did provide fans with some late fireworks, slamming three consecutive sixes in the 20th over bowled by Tom Curran.
Apart from the result, the match was an absolute treat for every cricket fan. As many as 33 sixes, joint-most in an IPL game, were witnessed during the course of Match 4. The IPL 2018 match between RCB and CSK had also dished out 33 sixes at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. In that match, RCB’s AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock had slammed 8 and 4 sixes respectively, playing a vital role in steering their side to a robust 205-run total.
In response, CSK, however, had hunted down the target with two balls to spare. For the Yellow Army, Ambati Rayudu had slammed 8 sixes in his 82-run knock, followed by Dhoni’s maximums in death overs. The skipper had smoked 7 sixes during his 70-run knock to seal the victory for CSK.
