Stats: Most runs in successful ODI chases
Kohli has scored 4214 runs in successful run-chases in ODI cricket and went past Ricky Ponting.
Virat Kohli has overhauled Ricky Ponting’s achievements in ODI cricket as the Indian skipper is currently running ahead of the most successful captain in the history of One-Day International cricket. Kohli, with a century in the first ODI against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium, brought up his 31st hundred in the format and went past Ricky Ponting (30 centuries) to be only behind Sachin Tendulkar (49).
While in the 2nd ODI game, Kohli scored only 29 runs in their chase of 231 runs in Pune. India won the game to level the series with help of the fifties from Shikhar Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik. With those 29 runs, Kohli now has scored 4214 runs in successful run-chases in ODI cricket and went past Ponting who scored 4186 runs. The 28-year-old who was only one run behind Ponting before this game is now second only to Sachin Tendulkar, who has 5490 runs in successful ODI chases.
It might not much time to take for Kohli to go past Tendulkar’s tally as well. The Indian skipper averages 93.64 in the successful ODI chases which is the 2nd highest average among the 104 players with 1000 runs in wins while chasing. Kohli is only behind the former Indian captain MS Dhoni (102.72) in terms of average.

Considering the overall runs scored in ODI cricket while chasing, Kohli is positioned at No.4 with 5485 runs and will be at No.2 behind Sachin (8720) in months of time. He needs 91 runs to move ahead of Jacques Kallis (5575) and 258 runs to surpass Sanath Jayasuriya (5742) in ODIs while chasing. The 28-year-old’s average of 65.29 while chasing in ODI cricket is by far the highest among 195 players who have scored at least 1000 runs. AB de Villiers comes next to Kohli with an average of 57.94 while chasing in this format.
