As Pakistan played the 3rd ODI against Australia, Babar Azam again played a wonderful knock to keep the visitors in hunt of a respectable total. In front of a full house at Perth, Babar scored an exhilarating 84 runs. This was his 6th half century in One-Day Internationals and his first against Australia. In his 100-ball stay at the crease, he scored just 4 boundaries and a maximum.
This knock helped Pakistan reach 263/7 in their quota of 50 overs. In the process of top scoring with 84, he also reached the milestone of becoming the joint-fastest batsman ever to score 1000 runs in ODIs. He did so in 21 innings, thus equalling the record with Sir Vivian Richards, Kevin Pietersen, Jonathan Trott and Quinton de Kock.
He became the fastest Pakistan player to score 1000 runs in ODIs. The record was earlier held by captain Azhar Ali who achieved the feat in 23 innings. He achieved it against Sri Lanka in 2015. The former explosive opener from the Caribbean islands, Gordon Greenidge also took 23 innings to reach the 1000th run in ODIs. He went on to create an identity of his own in a team which boasted of a batsman like Vivian Richards in their ranks.
Ryan ten Doeschate, the wonder man from Netherlands also took just 23 innings to score 1000 runs in ODIs. He’s the only batsman from an associate team in this top 10 list which is remarkable. He achieved this feat in 2009 in an ODI against Afghanistan.
The other batsmen who have their name on the list are former Kiwi batsman Glenn Turner who achieved the feat in 24 ODIs. Former Pakistani batsman Yasir Hamid also crossed the 1000-run mark in the same number of innings. He held the Pakistani record for more than 10 years before Azhar Ali pipped him.
