Stats: Virat Kohli bags his maiden duck in T20I cricket
The India captain was dismissed for a duck on the second ball he faced in the game by the left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff
Virat Kohli’s sensational streak in the T20I format against Australia came to an end at India’s new International venue, the Barsapara Stadium in Assam. The India captain was dismissed for a duck on the second ball he faced in the game by the left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff, who made his International debut in the 1st T20I at Ranchi.
Thus Virat recorded his 1st duck in T20I cricket, in his 48th innings. Thus, he owned the record for most consecutive innings before bagging the first duck in T20Is. Kohli went past Shoaib Malik, who recorded his first duck in his 41st innings while India’s Yuvraj Singh recorded it in his 39th innings when he part of Thisara Perera’s hat-trick in 2016.
Most innings before first duck in T20I cricket:
Kohli came into the game with an average of 303 runs in his last five T20Is against Australia. The Indian skipper recorded scores of 90*, 59*, 50, 82* and 22* in the last five matches in this format against the Aussies and missed out on becoming the first player to score fifty-plus in five consecutive T20I innings against an opposition.
He walked to bat in the very first over of the game after the dismissal of opener Rohit Sharma, got out on the 4th ball trapped in front having hit two boundaries in first three deliveries. On a similar delivery on the pads, Kohli managed to get a slight inside edge which was easily taken by the Aussie pacer. Behrendorff has a rich history coming to India as on his previous visit in 2013, he dismissed the Indian legendary batsmen, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid for ducks, which turned out to be last of their respective professional careers.
However, Kohli’s record might not last long as four other players have played 47 and more innings without a duck in this format. Marlon Samuels has played 58 innings in T20Is without a duck so far.
