A green track at the Eden Gardens in order to prepare for the South African Test tour did backfire at Team India as they lost three wickets for just 17 runs in the mere 11.5 overs of play that was possible of the first day due to rain and bad light interruptions. The Indian skipper, who lost the toss walked into bat after KL Rahul (0) and Shikhar Dhawan’s (8) departure before tea but got out himself without scoring having faced 11 balls.
The Sri Lankan seamer Suranga Lakmal trapped Virat Kohli in front to take his 3rd wicket of the innings. A DRS review couldn’t save Kohli as the Hawkeye showed it was the umpire’s call. This was Kohli’s 2nd duck in Test cricket in 2017 with his first coming against Australia at Pune earlier in February. Overall, this was his 5th duck in International cricket this year as he was out for nought against the Lankans in the Champions Trophy game and a recorded a duck each in the ODI and T20I series at home against Australia.
With that, Kohli became the 2nd Indian captain to bag five ducks in a calendar year after Kapil Dev. The former skipper also had five ducks to his name across formats in 1983. Three other players recorded four ducks in a year across formats while leading India. Prior to 2017, Kohli didn’t have a single duck as captain in his 49 innings but has five in 48 innings in 2017 already.
