Stats: Youngest players to pick 50 ODI wickets

Afghanistan’s 18-year-old leg-spinner, Rashid Khan continued his dream performances with the ball in the bilateral series against Ireland at Greater Noida. With another 4-wicket haul in the final ODI game, Rashid completed 50 ODI wickets and thus became the youngest bowler to bag 50 wickets in the 50-over format breaking Waqar Younis’ record which was set way back in 1990.

Waqar was 18 years and 358 years old when he set the record while Rashid came into this game at an age of 18 years and 185 days. Only 5 players in ODI history have managed to take 50 wickets before turning 20 and four of those are from Pakistan.

Youngest players to take 50 wickets in ODI cricket:

Rashid Khan took just 26 matches to complete 50 wickets in this format and stands among the quickest to the milestone. There are only 6 players in ODI history to take 50 wickets faster in terms of the number of games than Rashid. Sri Lankan mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis holds the record for been the quickest to take 50 wickets in ODI cricket as he needed only 19 games to reach the milestone.Rashid also equalled the record for fastest to 50 ODI wickets for an Afghanistan bowler, held by Hamid Hasan who also took 26 games to achieve the feat.Fewest matches took to complete 50 wickets in ODI cricket:
