The 2019 World Cup in England and Wales is scheduled to be played from May 30 to July 14 and India are deemed as one of the favourites to win the championship. Ahead of the mega tournament, India are encountered with some major issues, one of them is the veteran wicketkeeper batsman MS Dhoni’s form, which hasn’t been impressive in white-ball cricket by any stretch of the imagination.

He turned 37 this July and age is well and truly catching up with the Jharkhand-born cricketer, which is somewhat evident from the way he has played in recent times. However, Stephen Fleming, who is the coach of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for whom Dhoni has plied his trade ever since the inaugural edition, reckons Dhoni should play the World Cup and needs enough confidence to play the event.

He has got the ability to rise to the occasion

“I think India have enough options within their squad to include Dhoni because his strength is immeasurable. Watching him in the last IPL, his batting was as good as it has been. He needs to have the confidence to go and play like that in the One Day Internationals and I think the big stage is something he is looking forward to.

I know he has targeted World Cup and the opportunity if he gets there he should. It’s funny isn’t it for a guy who has played so much that he still needs confidence and no fear? That is what Dhoni likes and he should play with confidence and no fear,” the former New Zealand batsman was quoted as saying in an exclusive interview with Gulf News.

“He has amazing experience and he has got the ability to rise to occasion. As you get bit older, you don’t pick and choose but you need big opportunities to be at your best,” Fleming, who is currently coaching Bengal Tigers in this year’s T10 League at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, mentioned.

Despite his poor form, the selectors have somewhat made it clear the Dhoni would play the World Cup. Nevertheless, he was sidelined from the T20I team, which played a couple of three-match series’ against Windies and Australia. Dhoni’s endeavour in 2018 has already come to a close and he is most likely to be back in the Men in Blue’s ODI series against the Aussies next year.
