Australian skipper Steve Smith, who recently dethroned AB de Villiers as the number one ranked Test player in the world, was seen playing an unusual shot during the recently concluded historic day-night Test against New Zealand at the Adelaide Oval.

It was during the second innings when Steve Smith played the innovative shot. Chasing 187 for the victory, Australia lost Joe Burns early. The score was 56/1 when a fired up Trent Boult bowled a full-length delivery which came right back in, to Steve Smith, swinging sharply. Smith somehow managed to get an inside edge to the ball and the ball went flashing between his legs. What initially amused the commentators was the fact that they could not cipher where did the ball go from. The ball raced along the ground towards the fine leg region and crashed into the boundary ropes.

Replays clearly suggested that the Sydney-born Australian skipper had actually hit the ball right between his legs. The crowd went awe when they saw the replays on the big screens and the commentators couldn’t stop admiring the shot. They kept saying, “it is an unbelievable shot”.

Now whether or not Smith played the shot intentionally, one thing is for sure, the shot was an absolute delight to watch. In the very next over, Bracewell got rid of David Warner; and in the next over from Boult, Smith couldn’t ride on his luck anymore and was trapped in front of the stumps by Boult. He was dismissed for 14 runs. Australia went on to win the match by 3 wickets.
