Steve Waugh picks Virat Kohli as the best batsman of current generation
Last month, he added another feather to his cap when he bagged the top three honours at the International Cricket Council (ICC) awards and became the first cricketer to do so.
Virat Kohli’s ever-increasing list of admirers has one more name to it – the legendary Steve Waugh. Kohli’s remarkable consistency with the bat across bat has put him way ahead of his contemporaries. It does not matter whether he bats in India, England, South Africa or Australia, the India skipper has been churning out runs for fun in the last few years. Last month, he added another feather to his cap when he bagged the top three honours at the International Cricket Council (ICC) awards and became the first cricketer to do so.
Kohli was named Cricketer of the year and won the Sir Garfield Sobers trophy for the second time in succession, was named best Test player of the year and also ODI player of the year after his extraordinary batting form in 2018. Only former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting has the won the award in two successive years.
After a stunning 2017, Kohli enjoyed even a better 2018. He finished as the highest scorer in Test cricket with 1322 runs in 13 matches at an average of 55.08 with five hundreds and as many half-centuries while also finishing on top of the ODI runs tally with 1202 runs in 14 ODIs at 133.55 with six centuries.
With Kohli showing absolutely no signs of slowing down, Waugh has called him the best batsman of this generation. The former Australia skipper believes Kohli has got the perfect technique. “I think Virat Kohli has got the best technique. If I told someone to model himself on a particular player I would say Kohli has got a perfect technique,” Waugh told ESPNCricinfo when asked to pick the best batsman of the current generation.
Waugh’s favourite innings
In another interesting answer, Waugh opened up about his best knock in Tests. The legendary batsman revealed the double hundred against the mighty West Indies in 1995 is his favourite. The monumental knock from Waugh had helped Australia became the first team to beat West Indies in a series on home turf in 15 years.
The former Australian skipper also revealed his superstition as he carried a red cloth in his pocket while going out to bat.
