Subramaniam Badrinath terms Karun Nair's exclusion from the Test squad as harsh
He was benched throughout the England tour.
The announcement of the Indian Test squad for the upcoming series against Windies has stirred up a major storm regarding Karun Nair’s exclusion from the side. While some have praised the inclusion of the young, raw talent into the side, may have found the absence of Nair to be too conspicuous. Recently, Subramaniam Badrinath tweeted about his stand regarding the raging debate.
Only the second triple-centurion for the nation after Virender Sehwag, Nair has played only six Tests for India till date, three of which came after his scintillating knock against England back in 2016 at home. Much like Nair, opener Murali Vijay has also been ignored by the selectors for the series against the Windies. Several youngsters, including the likes of Mayank Agarwal, Mohammed Siraj and Prithvi Shaw have been drafted into the side.
Badrinath in support of Nair and Vijay
Questions are being raised on Nair’s ouster from the squad while someone like Hanuma Vihari has been selected into the side based on his India A performances. The vicious cycle of being selected into the national side and warming the benches throughout the length of it, at the cost of missing out on crucial domestic tournaments has hurt Karun Nair. More importantly, missing out on the Windies tour also implies that the Karnataka cricketer will have no platform to prove his mettle till November this year.
Former India cricketer, Subramaniam Badrinath tweeted in support of players like Nair and Vijay and deemed the selection decision to be ‘harsh’. He also quipped that this sort of a decision has not occurred for the first time and this will not be the last time either.
Windies will play the first of the two-match Test series against India at Rajkot starting from October 4. The tour will be an extensive one, comprising 2 Tests, 5 ODIs and 3 T20Is. India, after having had a disappointing run in the England series, will be looking to turn things around against the Carribean side, on the back of the recent Asia Cup victory.
