The Indian cricket team’s last international assignment before the World Cup ended in a 2-3 series loss to Australia. This was India’s first ODI series loss since 2015 when South Africa had beaten them by the same margin. The result was a concerning one as the Indian team had a 2-0 lead over Australia and lost the plot.

Meanwhile, the team management used the series to experiment with the team combination and while they might have thought that the team would get some answers to their queries before the World Cup began, at the end of the series, the team management was left with more questions than answers. However, the Virat Kohli-led Indian team are still top contenders to win the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019.

Sunil Gavaskar’s opinion on India’s chances of winning the World Cup

Gavaskar who was part of India’s 1983 World Cup winning team was recently asked about India’s chances of winning the World Cup this year. He hoped that the Indian team brought home their third World title, but refrained from predicting anything about their win in the competition.

However, he did have a quirky response to the question, involving a bit of palmistry. Gavaskar was quoted saying by Times of India, “I would be very happy to answer the question, (but) unfortunately I haven’t been able to check Virat Kohli’s palm…I cannot answer the question (but) I am hoping that India wins the World Cup.”

Gavaskar picks his favourites to win the World Cup

The first batsman to reach 10,000 runs in Test cricket and holder of the most Test centuries record at one time, Gavaskar picked England as favourites over India to win the World Cup due to the home advantage they have. “If you go by the history of last two or three World Cups, in 2011 the host nation India won, in 2015 host nation Australia won. In 2019, there is a very good chance that England will win the World Cup,” the legend said.
