Sunil Gavaskar feels Ranji Trophy winning players not playing IPL is surprising

The IPL 2019 came to an end with a glittering final between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings which saw MI become champions for a record fourth time by winning the match by just 1 run. It was a fitting end to one of the best editions of the tournament which saw SRH qualifying for the playoffs on just 12 points.

The tournament saw many big-name players prove their worth and justified the money bid by their franchise owners on them in the auction, while some of the players failed completely questioning the logic of big money bid on them. This has led former India captain Sunil Gavaskar to question the process of picking players in the IPL and why some proven entities of Indian domestic cricket are not picked by franchises.

One season wonders keep getting chances every edition

Sunil Gavaskar, writing for Sportstar, questioned why a player smashing local bowlers kept getting big money bids. “The so-called mystery bowlers who look good in local leagues have been exposed time and again in the IPL. Franchises shell out huge amounts to buy them at the auction, but when it comes to bowling to international and national batsmen, these players have invariably cut a sorry figure. However, in the next season, they still get picked for crores, which is baffling, to say the least,” he wrote.

“There have also been many one-season wonders, who have fallen away for the simple reason that they have lacked the basic technique needed to keep out a good delivery. By the time they come for the second season they have been studied and found out and so aren’t seen again,” he further mentioned.

Why no players from Ranji winning teams feature in IPL?

Gavaskar then questioned why no player from any of the Ranji Trophy winning teams have been picked in the IPL seasons. “When you look at the states or Ranji Trophy outfits that these players have come from, you will find that they are all from teams which have their former players as scouts for the franchises,” points out Gavaskar.

He mentions that one can count on fingers how many players from a Ranji Trophy-winning team or the semifinalists finds a place in IPL franchises. He says that players from such teams have good techniques to get success on the field and enables them to cope with the good deliveries far better than those who only play white ball cricket. Out of these, the players who have the ability to hit those good deliveries for sixes and fours become game changers and one thing is common between them is that all of them without exception also play red ball domestic first-class cricket.
