Sunil Gavaskar makes a bold prediction about Virat Kohli
Although Virat Kohli is still a long distance away from achieving what Tendulkar had achieved, there's no one who can argue about his credentials.
Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar is no stranger to holding tons on records to his name. He was the first cricketer in Test history to have scored over 10,000 runs and was also one of the first cricketers to have represented their nation over 100 Tests. Not many expected Gavaskar’s tally of 34 centuries would ever get broken.
But as it turns out, a Master Blaster entered the scene to overtake the Little Master and the rest, as they say, is history. Sachin Tendulkar wiped away every record there ever was to write his own chapter in this book named cricket. Just the way it happened in Gavaskar’s case, no one expected Sachin’s records to go down.
Although Virat Kohli is still a long distance away from achieving what Tendulkar had achieved, there’s no one who can argue about his credentials. If ever there was to be a cricketer to break the 45-year-old’s records, it has to be the current Indian skipper across all formats.
Talking to Aajtak, Sunil Gavaskar reckoned Kohli can continue for another 10 years at the top level and will break most of the Test and ODI records. The Star Sports commentator has always been a huge admirer of the 29-year-old and it doesn’t surprise anyone that he made such a bold prediction. “Virat can play for 10 more years and break most Test and ODI records,” he said.
Akhtar gives his nod
Pakistani legend Shoaib Akhtar recently set a milestone for Kohli, asking him to score 120 International centuries, as opposed to the World record of 100 tons set by Sachin Tendulkar. He never really backs away from showering praises on Kohli and he replied to Vikrant Gupta’s tweet.
Adding to what Mr Gavaskar said, the Rawalpindi express reckons Kohli, who will turn 30 on Monday, will break every record there ever was if he can maintain his fitness. Rohit Sharma will take over as the captain for the T20I series against Windies as Kohli will next appear in Australia.
