Sunil Gavaskar recalls 36 against England and compares it with MS Dhoni innings
Gavaskar managed just the 36 runs in 170 odd deliveries in the 1975 World Cup.
For the first time in his illustrious career, former India skipper MS Dhoni was booed away from the scene of play after being dismissed in the second ODI against England at Lord’s. At 37, one may very well question Dhoni’s motives behind continuing to play cricket at a time when most cricketers would begin considering retirement. However, his innings of 37 from 59 deliveries, at a time when the Indians needed to accelerate the innings was certainly something missing.
While the likes of Virat Kohli and Sanjay Bangar have come out and defended the 37-year old, many are bringing a rise to the debate of the former skipper beginnign to lose his finishing skills. India does have Hardik Pandya who can smash the ball ten to twelve rows back, but when it comes to Dhoni, this certainly begins to raise a question.
Even Nasser Hussain, the self-proclaimed Dhoni fanatic came out and stated that someone with the 37-year old’s character ought not be batting this way. He also highlighted that Dhoni was the sort of batsman who relished such situations and spoke about the 2011 World Cup final when Dhoni promoted himself atop the order to secure a win.
Dhoni’s struggles understandable says Gavaskar
Speaking about the same in his column in the Times of India, Sunil Gavaskar said that Dhoni’s innings reminded him of the horrific innings of 36 he played against England in the first ever World Cup match in 1975.
“Dhoni’s struggle was understandable because when confronted with an impossible situation, the options get limited and the mind becomes negative. Then, all good shots go to the fielders to add to the dot balls and the pressure becomes too much. Dhoni’s struggle reminded me of my infamous innings at the same venue.”
