About the World Cup winning coach
Gary Kirsten was the head coach of the Indian team which lifted the 2011 World Cup, after defeating neighbours Sri Lanka in the finals of the tournament. This victory marked the end of the team’s 28-year drought. India had previously won the World Cup in 1983. The former South African player was appointed as the Head Coach of the Men in Blue in 2008. The left-handed Protean, who had been a prolific opener in his times, brought in a considerable amount of improvement in India’s batting performances. Later, Kirsten also coached the South African team for the tenure 2011-2013.
