Surrey frontrunner to sign Kieron Pollard for the upcoming T20 Blast season
Kieron Pollard announced his international retirement on April 20.
Star all-rounder Kieron Pollard announced his retirement from international cricket earlier this month after having served the West Indies for 15 long years. He had made the official announcement on his Instagram account. He might have brought the curtains down on his international career but, he wants to be associated with the game actively by playing other forms of cricket.
Lately, it has been reported that the former West Indies skipper is eager to participate in the T20 Blast this year and Surrey is one of the county teams that has expressed interest in bringing Kieron Pollard on board. Should his signing go on smoothly, Pollard will be reunited with his former Windies teammate and mystery spinner Sunil Narine.
Kieron Pollard eager to play County cricket post retirement
According to ESPNcricinfo, “at least two counties have enquired about Pollard’s availability for the T20 Blast, which runs from May 25 – four days after his IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians, play their final game in this year’s IPL – until July 16.” Mumbai Indians have already knocked out of the tournament with eight losses in as many games and Pollard could be available for the entire Blast tournament.
The 2012 T20 World Cup winner will also be participating in the second edition of The Hundred. In fact, he was very first pick during the draft where he was roped in by the London Spirit. Meanwhile, if all goes well for Surrey, then the 34-year-old will be returning for a county stint for the very first time after more than a decade.
In fact, when Pollard was at the peak of his career, he had featured in two county seasons for Somerset in 2010 and 2011 and enjoyed a dream run, averaging 34.58 and scoring at a strike rate of 169.94 on the 22 yards and registering 41 scalps from 28 matches.
Currently, the Trinidadian cricketer is representing Mumbai Indians in the ongoing IPL 2022. He was one of the five-time winners’ mandatory retentions for this season including the likes of skipper Rohit Sharma, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, and middle-order sensation Suryakumar Yadav respectively. The all-rounder has so far amassed 115 runs from eight outings and has three scalps to his name.
