Haris Rauf became the Player of the Match for picking up a four-wicket haul.
Pakistan, on Tuesday, won their second game of the T20 World Cup 2021 Super 12s. The Babar Azam-led team defeated New Zealand by five wickets at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. With the thumping win, they also moved to the top of the points table, displacing Afghanistan. New Zealand, in the meantime, will be looking to make a comeback in their next game against India on October 31.
Bowlers step up for Pakistan again
After electing to field first, Pakistan did an excellent job as they restricted the Black Caps to 134 for eight in 20 overs. The Kiwis made a steady start as Martin Guptill and Daryl Mitchell stitched together a 36-run stand for the opening wicket off 32 balls. Pacer Haris Rauf sent back Guptill to separate the duo. A few overs later, Imad Wasim got rid of Mitchell, who scored a handy 20-ball 27.
Kane Williamson made 25 off 26 with two fours and a six before Hasan Ali ran him out at the striker’s end. James Neesham perished cheaply, but Devon Conway got the innings forward with a 24-ball 27. New Zealand lost wickets at regular intervals and could hardly find any kind of momentum. Rauf was excellent for Pakistan as he picked up four wickets for 22 runs in four overs.
Asif Ali plays a blinder
Pakistan made a steady start to their run-chase as Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan put on 28 for the opening wicket. Tim Southee struck first blood after he nipped out Babar for nine. Fakhar Zaman didn’t last long and got out to Ish Sodhi after hitting a solitary six. Mohammad Hafeez also cleared the ropes once after which Mitchell Santner dismissed him. Imad Wasim couldn’t last long either.
However, with New Zealand making a strong comeback, Asif Ali came to the party. The right-hander smashed Southee for two sixes downtown and brought Pakistan back into the match. He stayed unbeaten on 27 off 12 balls with the help of one four and three sixes. Shoaib Malik brought all his experience to the fore. The 39-year-old remained not on 27 as Pakistan won with eight balls left.
