South Africa made a hat-trick of Super12 victories, decimating Bangladesh in Abu Dhabi on November 2 to take another step towards the semi-final qualification.

Unable to start their campaign on the right note – South Africa lost to Australia – they have roared themselves back into contention, and are the only team apart from England to boast a positive net run rate in their group. Bangladesh, on the other hand, added one more to the previous three losses but the one today was surely they would be most disappointed with.

After being put in, their batters fell like nine pins courtesy of a searing new-ball spell of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje, who scalped six wickets amongst them, with only three of Mahmudullah’s men – Liton Das (24 off 36), Mahedi Hasan (27 off 25) and Shamim Hossain (11 off 20) – mustering scores in the double-digit. Rabada was menacing right from the onset, denting his opponents early with a double-wicket over, while Nortje cleaned up the tail.

Meanwhile, Tabraiz Shamsi, much like he has been throughout this year, was in the wickets too, picking up 2/21, while Dwaine Pretorius got one. Although, it was Nortje’s numbers that left one most impressed: 3.2-0-8-3. The collective firing of the Protea bowlers meant Bangladesh were skittled out for just 84 in 18.2 overs to stamp their fourth loss on the wall by just the time their innings ended.

During the chase, they did throw some challenges for the opponents but that total was never being defended. South Africa lost their first wicket in the opening over of their response when Taskin Ahmed trapped Reeza Hendricks lbw, while Quinton de Kock, who struck three boundaries in his 16-run knock, was cleaned up Mahedi Hasan to fall as the second wicket inside the powerplay.

Rassie van der Dussen was not at his fluent best but hung around to knock off 22 runs of the target in 27 balls after Taskin removed Aiden Markram for a four-ball duck. Van der Dussen had skipper Temba Bavuma for the larger part of his innings, playing fuss-free cricket at the other end. Bavuma stood unbeaten on 31 off 38, with a solitary six and three boundaries, as South Africa finished the chase with 6.3 overs and six wickets to spare.
