T20 World Cup 2022: 5 Indian players who might not be considered after the tournament
With some of the players ageing and the approach to batting changing in the T20Is, team India might get revamped after this year's mega event.
At present, the BCCI has the largest player talent and resources available at its disposal. Thanks to the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Indian men’s team get brimmed with new cricketers every year. However, in the coming future, there’s also a transition cycle ready to happen.
Perhaps whether we like it or not, team India will witness a small evolution in T20Is soon. As the future T20 World Cup will happen in 2024, the team inevitably will have to revamp itself in a new avatar. Also, with regards to our current playing greats who are ageing, let us better enjoy their vintage in the longer formats. Overall, after this year’s ICC event, the men’s T20I team might kickstart a new era in the shortest format, especially with a new captain.
Therefore in this list, let’s then check out 5 Indian players who might not be considered after T20 World Cup 2022.
1. Dinesh Karthik
Presently our beloved DK is in a blissful T20 form. His resurgence in the shortest format has also benefitted India immensely. The cricketer also has a good chance of playing in the World Cup this year. However, post the 2022 World T20, we might witness Dinesh Karthik hanging his boots or getting dropped.
Perhaps his recall in the T20Is looks only fruitful till the mega event in Australia. Post that the selectors would prefer instilling youngsters who possess a similar skill set as Karthik. Maybe in his position, we might see talented players like Shahrukh Khan or Ayush Badoni. Also, the cricketer’s ageing body will refrain Karthik from sustaining himself till the future T20 World Cup.
Overall, this veteran’s immediate goal is also to bag a ticket for the 2022 World T20. That’s why post-November 2022, we might even see DK announcing his international retirement. Hopefully this white-ball great should hang his boots with two T20 World Cup accolades.
2. Virat Kohli
Undoubtedly, Virat Kohli’s sluggish batting form has become a big worry for India. Regardless of the formats, this behemoth has been struggling to singlehandedly win matches. Unfortunately, if Kohli’s form continues to malfunction then sadly we might see him vacating T20Is.
Perhaps to prolong his overall international career, this legend might find it right to goodbye in the shortest format. Also, the other two longer formats look much more comfortable for King Kohli to thrive. More importantly, as the 33-year-old adores Test cricket the most, his ageing days would be more of facing the red-ball.
Comprehensively, even the selectors have oodles of options for replacing Virat Kohli with other batters. However, the Indian fans would definitely want this T20I master to at least win the 2022 World T20.
3. Rohit Sharma
Just like Virat Kohli, even Rohit Sharma might bid adieu in T20Is. As the skipper is no longer getting younger, his vintage days might better be visible in the longer formats. Also, his ageing body and fitness certainly need him to curtail the unnecessary workload.
However, the 35-year-old would also prefer playing red-ball cricket in profusion. As the batter has currently prospered in Tests, Rohit would further like to embrace the toughest format. Notably, Hitman’s age would also allow him to play a maximum of four more years. Or maybe his ceaseless hamstring injury might become a hindrance to shortening his international career.
Overall, even the selectors have groomed plenitude of white-ball openers to fill in Rohit’s boots after the ICC event. But the Indian fans would want the captain to at least win one ICC T20 trophy during his leadership.
4. Ravichandran Ashwin
Interestingly, Ravi Ashwin made a comeback in T20Is last year. The veteran played the 2021 T20 World Cup in place of Washington Sundar. However post that, Ashwin has again been kept on standby for the 2022 World T20. As team India now has Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Bishnoi as main spinners, the old maestro might only get selected if they are absent. Also in the Australian conditions, the management might maximum pick two-three spin bowlers in the main squad.
But sadly, post this year’s ICC event, Ashwin might be asked to only prolong his Test career. As the cricketer also struggles with his fitness, the 35-year-old would eliminate himself from T20Is. More importantly, as India also won’t travel overseas much, Ashwin would prefer scaling up his Test wickets tally.
Barring all this, the selectors also have other white-ball spinners like Kuldeep Yadav, Rahul Chahar and Washington Sundar waiting in the reserves. Therefore, even this veteran might depart after the upcoming 2022 World T20.
5. Bhuvneshwar Kumar
At present, Bhuvi looks perfectly fine to play as many T20Is as possible. Certainly, the pacer has also booked his place in the World T20 squad. The 32-year-old also looks all okay to continue playing post-2022 T20 World Cup. However if yet again, Bhuvi encounters a spree of injuries then selectors might snub him.
Of course, even the IPL again would become a strong source of a comeback, but the Indian team now contains a mega pool of seamers. Ideally, someone like Deepak Chahar is already waiting to redeem his place against Bhuvi. The 29-year-old’s improved batting skills might entirely make him pervade Bhuvi’s spot.
Additionally, the emergence of Arshdeep Singh might also be an interesting option if the pacer becomes unfit. The southpaw as a proposition can swing the ball both ways and contains a truckload of variations. Comprehensively, even the likes of Shardul Thakur might line up if this veteran starts to fade. Otherwise, this bowler might finish as a T20I great for team India.
