Mahela Jayawardene is currently the leading run-scorer in T20 World Cup history with 1016 runs to his name from 31 matches played between 2007 to 2014 editions including a century and six half-centuries averaging over 39 and a phenomenal strike rate of over 134. He was an integral member of the Sri Lankan squad that made the finals in the 2009 and 2012 editions and emerged triumphant in 2014.

Jayawardene might have retired after 2014 T20 World Cup, but his record remains intact to date. However, there is a golden opportunity for many world-class modern-day batters across the globe to shatter this record in the 2022 edition of the T20 World Cup.

These include the likes of Chris Gayle (965), Rohit Sharma (847), Virat Kohli (845), and last edition’s Player of the Tournament David Warner (762). If either of the above batters has a dream run down under, then the long-standing record in T20 World Cup history will find a new name.
