Tamim Iqbal reprimanded for breaching ICC Code of Conduct

Veteran Bangladeshi cricketer, Tamim Iqbal, has been fined 15 per cent of his match fees for an ICC Code of Conduct violation during the first Test against Australia. The first Test between the two sides saw the hosts eke out a narrow win to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series. Tamim played a key role in the game with his consistent showing in both the innings.

However, he was found guilty of breaching the Article 2.1.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game.” As per the recent reports in Cricket365.com, Tamim was fined for his actions on the day four play of the Test match.

The incident

It was his apparent send off to Australian batsman Matthew Wade, that saw him breach the code of conduct. Wade was seen changing his gloves frequently during the Australian second innings. Tamim was clearly unimpressed with the gestures and tactics deployed by the Australian batsmen. Hence, when Wade was ultimately dismissed, Tamim Iqbal was seen gesturing Wade to walk back to the pavilion.

The on-field umpires, Aleem Dar and Nigel Llong, along with the third umpire Ian Gould, all collaborated in unison to report the matter to the match referee Jeff Crowe. Jeff Crowe proposed the sanction wherein Tamim was handed a fine of 15 per cent of his match fees. The veteran batsman accepted the offence and hence there will be no further hearing in the matter.

Along with the fine, he was also handed a demerit point. The demerit point has been added to his disciplinary record. This is his second demerit point. Earlier in March this year, he was handed a demerit point during a Test fixture against Sri Lanka. Pursuant to Article 7.6 of the Code, if Tamim reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they will be converted into suspension points and he will be banned for a match.
