Team-wise replacement for England players if they don't participate in IPL 2021

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 is all set to take place this September. All the teams would be rearing to get on the field and start right from where they left. However, the one issue every team will be facing is the unavailability of English players for the second phase of IPL 2021. Ashley Giles, ECB’s director of cricket, had announced that England have a busy schedule in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup while confirming that they would rest players on occasions. England will be flying to Bangladesh and Pakistan for bilateral series before the T20 World Cup. Their busy schedule leaves them with no window to participate in IPL, which is likely to take place from mid-September to the second week of October in the UAE. This comes as a big blow for several teams as many of the teams have a lot of key players who happen to be from England. Thus, they will have to replace all their English players with players from other countries. Today we shall be taking a look at – Replacement for England players if they don’t show up in UAE leg of IPL 2021 1) Chennai Super Kings- Devon Conway and Tim Southee: Devon Conway. (Photo Souce: Getty Images) If players from England do skip the remainder of IPL 2021, then Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be one of the affected teams. Two of their overseas players playing in their XI for the first half of the tournament were English players. CSK depend a lot on Moeen Ali and Sam Curran and they need their replacements to be as good as them. Devon Conway and Tim Southee are ideal replacements for the two English all-rounders. While Conway isn’t an all-rounder, he is in the form of his life and is an ideal top-order batsman for the yellow army. He can damage the opposition just like Moeen and play the match-winning knocks against strong oppositions as well. While Tim Southee’s form in the shortest format of the game hasn’t really been the best, he is a veteran and his experience can be handy for MS Dhoni and his boys. He can bowl with the new ball like Sam Curran. He can hit some lusty blows with the bat as well. It would be safe to say that these two New Zealanders are ideal replacements for CSK’s English all-rounders. 2) Sunrisers Hyderabad- Alex Hales and Mushfiqur Rahim: Alex Hales. (Photo Source: Getty Images) Sunrises Hyderabad (SRH) had two English players who bat at the top. Jason Roy and Johnny Bairstow are arguably two of the greatest openers in the shortest versions of the game right now and their absence is definitely going to hurt SRH. Thus, they need good replacements for the two explosive openers from England. Alex Hales and Mushfiqur Rahim are like-for-like replacements and might just be the solution to SRH’s problems. While Alex Hales is an English player himself, he can still play the second phase of the tournament as he is not a part of the England team and is free to play the IPL. He is an ideal replacement for Jason Roy and can be as deadly as Roy at the top of the order. While Rahim might be an unexpected name on this list, he has genuinely improved his T20 game and has worked on his strike rate as well. He is also a wicketkeeper and can don the gloves for the Orange Army. Besides, SRH lack a middle-order batsman who can play the role of a finisher and Rahim can as well take up that role. 3) Kolkata Knight Riders- Aaron Finch: BRISTOL, ENGLAND – JUNE 01: Aaron Finch of Australia. (Photo by Jordan Mansfield/Getty Images) If the English players do skip the second phase of IPL 2021, then the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) would have to play without their regular skipper Eoin Morgan. Morgan might not be in the best of form but he’s a valuable asset in T20s no matter what. Thus, KKR would need a world-class player to replace the English ODI and T20I skipper in their team. Who could be a better replacement than Aaron Finch? Finch is one of the greatest T20 players of all time and his firepower is something that KKR are missing at the top of the order. The Australian ODI and T20I captain is a decent player against spin as well. This might just prove to be a blessing in disguise as Finch is a superb captain as well. With Morgan gone, Shah Rukh Khan’s team needs an experienced captain to lead them. Finch could play the role of a leader and change KKR’s fortune too. Thus, Finch might be the ideal replacement that can solve KKR’s problems. 4) Delhi Capitals- Carlos Brathwaite, Matthew Wade, and Sheldon Cottrell: Sheldon Cottrell. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Delhi Capitals (DC) are another team that will be missing a lot of players if the ECB doesn’t allow their players to participate in the remainder of the tournament. They would have to then find replacements for Sam Billings, Chris Woakes, and Tom Curran. Although none of the three of them were going to start in the XI anyway, DC would still need replacements in the form of players who could be backups and play whenever needed. Carlos Brathwaite, Matthew Wade, and Sheldon Cottrell are ideal replacements for the three English players from DC. Brathwaite can hit the ball a long way and can bowl a few good overs as well. An important point to be noted is that Brathwaite is a match-winner and can even win you matches on his day. While Wade hasn’t really been consistent of late, he has been superb in the last few Big Bash League (BBL) seasons. He even looked good in the T20I series against India last year. Thus, Wade can be a good replacement for Billings. Last but not the least, Cottrell would be a good replacement as well. Tom Curran wasn’t convincing in the first half of IPL 2021 and didn’t really set the stage on fire. This, his unavailability might just prove to be a blessing in disguise. Besides, Cottrell is more than just a decent bowler and can give you wickets in the first 6 overs of the innings. 5) Rajasthan Royals- Rassie Van Der Dussen, Glenn Phillips, Kusal Perera, and Beuran Hendricks: Kusal Perera. (Photo by GEOFF CADDICK/AFP/Getty Images) It is safe to say that the Rajasthan Royals (RR) will be the most affected team if the English players are not going to participate in the second half of IPL 2021. Most of their key players are from England and thus they would need to do a lot of homework before picking their replacements. RR would be without the services of Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, and Liam Livingstone. Fortunately, RR had already picked Rassie Van Der Dussen as a replacement during the first half of IPL 2021. This means that the Royals need three more replacements. In an ideal scenario, they could pick Glenn Phillips, Kusal Perera, and Beauran Hendricks. Kusal Perera and Glenn Phillips are superb keepers in the shortest format of the game. Both of them have proved themselves time and again and have shown that they can hit the ball a long way. Coming to Hendricks, he has been fairly good for the Proteas in recent times. He has a lot of variations up his sleeves and can thus be a decent replacement. 6) Punjab Kings- Colin Munro: Colin Munro. (Photo by Kai Schwoerer/Getty Images) While the Punjab Kings (PBKS) do have Dawid Malan, it won’t be that big of a loss as they never really needed him in the XI. He was a backup for the Universe Boss Chris Gayle. Thus, Punjab only need one replacement who would mostly warm the bench and play only when Gayle gets injured. Colin Munro is an ideal replacement for Dawid Malan. Like England’s number 3 batsman in the shortest format of the game, he too is an experienced player and has been playing for a long time. Munro is one of the most explosive T20 players the world has seen and can truly be deadly on his day. In the 65 T20I games Munro has played, he has scored 1724 runs at an average and strike rate of 31.35 and 156.54 respectively. He has also scored three T20I hundreds. He can be an ideal backup for Gayle as he too is a hard hitter and can play the big shots.
