'That was the start of us believing we can win overseas' - Virat Kohli backs India to ace South Africa challenge
We are a very well placed in terms of experience and belief, Kohli said.
Since South Africa’s return to cricket in 1992, the Indian team has failed to win a Test series in the Proteas nation. In 2018, India had the best chance to overcome this record. However, the team lost the series after losing the last two matches of the three-match series.
India will travel to South Africa later this month, and all eyes will be on Virat Kohli. His performance in the series might be a key factor if India wants to win this series. In a press conference before the Indian team departs, captain Kohli shared some important details about India’s preparation and chances
“South Africa was really the start of us believing that we can win overseas,” he said. India won the first Test of the last series in 2018 and then lost the last two games on the trot. South Africa didn’t dominate India throughout these two games, but some silly mistakes cost India. Kohli has stressed this factor a number of times in the past, and during this press conference, he also said that “We have left ourselves to do a bit too much at times, with sessions going against us.”
The Indian squad is a mixture of young and experienced players. It might help the team in this series, and Kohli also feels the same. He mentioned, “We are a very well placed in terms of experience and belief. We can do something special and get the results we want as a team.”
Test captaincy will not take a hit, promises Kohli
The recent past weeks have not been the best for the Indian cricket team. Kohli left the T20 captaincy, and India lost the T20 World Cup 2021, after which BCCI has removed Kohli from the ODI captaincy too. On these recent developments, Kohli mentioned, “About captaincy, I have been honest and have done that up my potential.”
On a question related to his batting Kohli answered, “About my batting, when you know you’ve been doing well, you know how to perform. Those things won’t go away. It’s about understanding your game and doing what you have been.”
