England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has made some tough decisions over the past few weeks now. Firstly, they kept Alex Hales out of the 55-man list that they announced for the upcoming training schedule. Secondly, they kept Liam Plunkett out as well. The fast bowler has been ignored by the selectors since the World Cup last year.

He had bowled a superb spell in the World Cup final against New Zealand at Lord’s last year. He returned with the figures of 3/42 while also picking 11 wickets in the tournament. However, the selectors have moved on from the right-arm seamer it seems with age not being on his side. This entire situation has made former England captain Michael Vaughan furious.

In a recent interaction, he called the treatment of Plunkett ‘disappointing’. He also pointed out that the fast bowler found out about his omission from Twitter.

Michael Vaughan expresses anger over the Liam Plunkett issue

“The most disappointing thing that I heard in that interview was that after the World Cup final, he won England a World Cup with a group of players and management, and not one person rang him up. Not one person. He had to find that (news of omission) out through Twitter – I’m sorry, that’s back in your day, Phil. That doesn’t happen in this era of cricket, that’s a disgrace,” Vaughan said in a podcast with former left-arm spinner Phil Tufnell.

The England selectors are supposedly looking for young bowlers. Liam Plunkett will be 38 by the time the next World Cup arrives in 2023. This has created a situation where England are looking for fresh young bowlers to fill in the shoes of someone like Plunkett and Vaughan questioned this policy of the English selectors as well.

“I can’t understand it. I know people are looking to go forward, you got to always think about four years time … [but he’s] experienced, played all around the world, was the go-to guy for Eoin Morgan in that World Cup, can bat as well, great team member – I can’t quite see it”, Vaughan added.

Meanwhile, Liam Plunkett has expressed his desire to play international cricket for the United States of America. His wife is an American citizen and if he lives in America for three years, he would be eligible to play for the USA.
