The Best of 2017: Top 5 bowlers with most wickets in ODIs

Over the years we have seen many rule changes in the ODI and most of them have favoured batsmen. 10 years ago, a score of 250 was considered to be a good total but these days with new rules posting 300 on the board has become a norm. It is difficult to be a bowler in current circumstances but there are bowlers who have still managed to do well in this format. Some teams just try to stop the opposition from scoring, a move which often backfires. The only way to contain opposition to a small score is by chipping away with wickets at regular intervals. Therefore, if a team wants to be successful, it needs bowlers who can strike. We take a look at top 5 bowlers who claimed the most wickets in ODI crickets in 2017. The list contains 4 fast bowlers and 1 spinner. 5. Trent Boult – 31 wickets Trent Boult of New Zealand. (Photo by Michael Steele/Getty Images) New Zealand made it to the final of the 2015 World Cup on the back of brilliant performances from the opening bowlers Tim Southee and Trent Boult. Boult was in great form in 2017 as he took 31 wickets in just 16 ODIs in the year. The left-arm pacer was at his best in the recently concluded ODI series vs Windies where he took 10 wickets in 3 matches. The 28-year-old can be very threatening on his day, he showed his potency on the Indian tour too. The New Zealand pacer was the Man of the Match in the first ODI of series vs India where he took 4 wickets. New Zealand seem over-dependent on their opening bowler as they struggled in the matches where Boult didn’t pick early wickets. 4. Liam Plunkett – 36 wickets England’s Liam Plunkett. The England pacer believes in hitting the pitch hard and troubles the batsmen with his pace and bounce. He is one of the best in the business when it comes to taking wickets in the middle overs. The Durham pacer was in great form this year as he took 36 wickets in just 18 matches for England. His best performance came against the Windies where he took 10 wickets in the 3-match series. While his fitness doesn’t allow him to play Test cricket he is a great asset for any team in the limited overs format. 3. Jasprit Bumrah – 39 wickets Jasprit Bumrah of India. He took the wicket of Fakhar Zaman which was later ruled to be a no ball, a moment which proved to be the turning point of the Champions Trophy final. Bumrah proved that he has a mature head on his shoulders as he put the scar behind him and developed his skills right through the year. He is known for his ability to bowl brilliant yorkers in the death yorkers. He ability to bowl yorkers consistently has won him many plaudits. Very early in his career, the 24-year-old has become Virat Kohli’s trump card in the pressure situations. 2. Rashid Khan – 43 wickets Rashid Khan of Afghanistan. He had a year to remember as Afghanistan continued their rise in the International arena. Afghanistan even managed to draw an ODI series vs former world champions Windies. The leg-spinner was the star of the show as he took 7 wickets as the Afghans managed to beat Windies for the first time in their history. He took 43 wickets in just 16 ODIs in 2017 at an average of just over 10. Rashid is known for his ability to cut down the flow of runs and supress the batsmen into giving away their wickets. His wrong un’ has proved to be very tough to read and is one of his prime weapons. 1. Hasan Ali – 44 wickets Hasan Ali. (Photo Source: Twitter) 2017 was clearly Hasan Ali’s year as he took 44 wickets in 19 matches and broke many records. The right-arm fast bowler was brilliant in the Champions Trophy as he bagged wickets in the crucial middle overs in virtually every match. The 23-year-old took 13 wickets in the tournament and was adjudged the Player of the Tournament as Pakistan won the trophy. He rose to the first position in the ICC ODI bowler rankings as he took 3 five-wicket hauls in the year. In the process, Hasan became the fastest Pakistani to claim 50 wickets in ODIs and took over Waqar Younis‘ record. He deservedly won the PCB emerging player of the year award in 2017.
