Former Scotland cricketer Majid Haq lashed out at Scotland players for not speaking up despite a recent independent review finding Cricket Scotland to be “institutionally racist”. While many cricketers around the world have surprisingly revealed racial discrimination now, Haq and his former teammate Qasim Sheikh opened up about being treated indifferently due to their skin colour while playing international cricket for Scotland.

An independent review conducted after Haq’s claims found Cricket Scotland’s governance and leadership practices were “institutionally racist”. Sheik’s lawyer Aamer Anwar took it to Twitter to question the Scotland players’ hypocrisy for taking a knew at the T20 World Cup 2021 and not speaking about it yet.

“What was the point of Scotland ‘taking the knee’ at the ICC T20 World Cup in 2021, when no white team member has chosen to say anything much or at all over the last few days on institutional racism @CricketScotland. Silence is not an option, anti-racism not non-racism,” Anwar tweeted.

Majid Haq criticises Scotland players for staying quiet

Haq, who played 54 ODIs and 21 T20 internationals from the period 2006 to 2015 for Scotland, also criticized the white team members for staying quiet on the matter. Players have been taking a knee to support anti-racism in the sport after a lot of painful incidents around the world.

“Dear Scotland’s Cricket Team & Capt @Berrington44 What makes you all so silent? Shameful that white team members have said little or nothing on damning report on racism @CricketScotland but you were happy to take the knee in 2021″, Haq’s tweet on Twitter read.

Haq also responded to another Tweet stating the “deafening silence” from the players affirms that the practices have taken place. He concluded that although it might sound uncomfortable, the white players of Scotland will never understand the depth of the matter as they have the luxury of not worrying about racism during team selection.

“Looks like it was nothing other than a bit of virtue signalling & tick box exercise because the deafening silence from a lot of them speaks volumes. They might feel uncomfortable, but their privilege is never having to think you’ll not make the team because of racism,” Haq responded to Anwar’s tweet on Twitter.
