The Fighter’s; Top 10 Comebacks in Cricket: The game of Cricket can be related to life to a considerable extent. Similar to life, failures or rather rough patches for players are bound to come. But overcoming the failures and drawing the destiny to success contributes to the real strength of a player. We have witnessed plenty of careers being almost ended when the will of the respective players backed them to take a U-turn from their positions towards some glory. From being the captain of the Indian team in one series, he was dropped from the squad all of a sudden with darker prospects in the immediate next series back in 2004. After India’s glorifying run in World Cup 2003, followed by a successful tour in Australia which was eventually followed by a historic series win in Pakistan, Sourav Ganguly gained immense respect as the captain of India and was considered as perhaps one of the best captains till then. But he was struggling a bit with the bat which led to his exclusion from the team in mid-2005. Also, he was made to believe by the then members of the team management that his cricketing career literally ended and he needed to step aside to give space for the YOUNGSTERS. But dada showed everyone some dadagiri and his domestic performances forced the selectors to pick him back in the team for the South Africa series in 2006 and he scored a fighting fifty against the fiery pace attack of the South Africans. His performances gained him spot in the ODI squad too and this happens to be the most spirited and bravest comebacks of all time. Many people take inspiration from this majestic comeback. 2. Yuvraj Singh: Yuvraj Singh. (© Getty Images) A man who overlooked cancer to play World Cup for his country and eventually became the Player of the Tournament in the World Cup needs no introduction. Yuvraj fought cancer and eventually returned to life. Not only that, he even started playing Cricket at the national level since his return from cancer. The kind of grit and determination he possesses is supernatural to an extent. After he recovered from cancer, he worked on his fitness and batting to make himself fit enough for international cricket. He did set an example that it is the hard work that sets the destiny of an individual and not the fate. Yuvraj’s story being an inspirational one has also translated into a book. 3. Zaheer Khan: Zaheer Khan. (Photo Source: AFP) Zaheer has been prone to a number of injuries throughout his career. In IPL 7, he was injured just after playing a few games. He underwent surgeries and did not play any kind of cricket for almost a year. And as expected, he was not included in the World Cup squad and was released from his previous IPL franchise. He was bought by Delhi Daredevils and since his return to cricket, he has been awesome to say the least. The left arm seamer took 7 wickets in 6 matches and has been quite much economical. Such kind of comeback at his age is indeed praiseworthy. 4. Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi: Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. (Photo Source: PA Photos) Also known as “Tiger Pataudi”, this man became an example of courage, determination and never giving up attitude. In the early days of his career, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi had immense interest in cricket and played county cricket in England. At the age of 20, he suffered an accident which made him lose the visioning of an eye. It was believed to the end of Pataudi’s career. At a time, where he struggled to pick up a glass in front of him, it would be daunting to even imagine him playing against the fast bowlers with such an impaired vision. But he never gave up and that devotion brought him back to the Indian Cricket team. “Tiger Pataudi” by name, went on to score 6 international centuries since then and also captained India. Under his leadership, India emerged to be one of the strongest teams of the time. 5. Ashish Nehra: Ashish Nehra .(© Getty Images) Throughout his career, this man has suffered from a number of setbacks. From being one of the key bowlers of the Indian line up in 2003, he was excluded from the team due to several injuries. The left arm pacer made his return to cricket in 2007. He was one of the fierce bowlers in 2011 World Cup. But again, this man suffered with fitness and form related issues and was excluded. In this IPL, he made an emphatic return. Nehra has been the prime strength for CSK and has been in constant run for the purple cap for them. Surely, he is a player who never gives up and fights without accepting defeat. 6. Jesse Ryder: Jesse Ryder (Photo Source: Associated Press) The fatty boy of New Zealand was a formidable opening batsman for them. But, everyone has a share of some rough patch. Few years back, Ryder got involved in a brawl in a pub and he was beaten severely which led him into a stage of coma. He fought his life and somehow his life was spared but quite obviously, his cricketing prospects were darkened. But the left handed batsman did not accept defeat willingly. His determination made him return to cricket and has been a consistent performer in the domestic cricket since then. He is soon to return to international Cricket. 7. Sachin Tendulkar: Sachin Tendulkar (Photo Source : AFP) The GOD of the game is known for his passion and sheer dedication for the game. At a time in 2005, he was forced to quit cricket temporarily due to his “tennis elbow” injury. The Little Master suffered from acute pain and it was nearly impossible for him to return to cricketing stages. There was a time when he could barely pick up a cup with tremendous pain. It was quite hard to believe that he could back to cricketing ways and thrash the bowlers with his former instinct. But he worked into his fitness and made an emphatic return to international cricket and went onto play 200 tests in his career. He deserves respect for his zeal. 8. Daniel Vettori: Daniel Vettori. (Photo Source: AFP) The most disciplined and perhaps the best spinner for the Kiwis did set up a story of sheer motivation for the present as well as the future generations. The legendary left arm spinner Daniel Vettori called off his cricket career in 2013 but sensing the need for a quality spinner, he made a return to international cricket at the age of 36 prior to World Cup tournament and had immense contributions with the ball for New Zealand at the World Cup. No one even thought of this man returning to cricket and be like the same spirited spinner who used to torment the batsmen with his economical spells. He took 15 wickets in the World Cup and had immense contributions in taking New Zealand to the finals. But unfortunately, life being unfair, the Mr. Spirited ended up being on the losing side in the World Cup, 2015 Final. 9. Brian Charles Lara: Brian Lara .(Photo Source: Getty Images) During the group stages of the Champions Trophy, 2002, he was forced to leave the team due to Hepatitis B disease that inflicted him. This disease could be deadlier than AIDS but fortunately this disease has a cure unlike the latter one. Brian Lara was diagnosed from the disease thereafter but his cricketing career was on the verge of flickering away. But his zeal and fighting instinct brought him back in the game and this particular man scored the record breaking 400 runs in an innings in 2004, after his return. Also, he was a member of the Champions Trophy winning squad of the West Indies in 2004. This portrays of the fact that the people who don’t accept defeat are most unlikely to get defeated. 10. Michael Clarke: Michael Clarke. (© Getty Images) At a stage in early 2014, one of the most talented pros of the Australian cricket, Michael Clarke suffered from an immense back pain followed by a career ending hamstring injury. There was a time when he could barely sit or bend his back. Prospects of returning to international cricket and that too as the Aussie captain seemed to flicker away for this right handed batting superstar. But he didn’t lose hope and made an inspiring return to international cricket in December, 2014 and scored an emphatic test century in memory of Phil Hughes. But his injury shadowed his fitness once again and with the World Cup edging closer, it was no easy time for ‘Pup’. Clarke underwent a hamstring surgery, worked hard to rehabilitate and get fit at the right time and in the end he proved to possess the courage to beat the injury and lead Australia to a triumph at the World Cup. He retired from ODI cricket with his name being crafted as a World Cup winning captain.
