The figures in Anil Kumble's remuneration plan may be botched up

India may be fresh off a 105-run triumph against a lowly Windies, but all is certainly not well out of the field. The 180-run mauling against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final hasn’t gone down smoothly with the fans and the board, but India’s troubles started before their campaign began as there were reports of a rift between then head coach Anil Kumble and Virat Kohli.

Although Kohli had denied these allegations, they proved to be true as Kumble resigned from his post even as he had reapplied for it a couple of days ago and had his contract extended for the tour of West Indies. Before stepping down with a most candid and sincere statement, Kumble had also proposed a remuneration model at the behest of the Committee of Administrators (CoA), pitching for a substantial hike in players’ salaries.

Vague assumptions

However, a BCCI official has claimed that this model was not based on true figures.

“The figures he stated were not correct. He calculated figures of one year when the BCCI had to give extra money from its kitty so that international and domestic cricketers didn’t take a hit because that year the BCCI did not make substantial revenue due to very few home matches,” the official claimed who was apparently present on the day of the IPL final, when Kumble had first made the presentation as per HT.

The former coach had also recommended a special fee for the captain for taking extra responsibility and reportedly demanded 60 per cent of the captain’s estimated earnings for coach, one of the many things that may not have gone down well with the board during Kumble’s tenure as coach in which he tasted a lot of success.

The remuneration plan will be once again taken up by the BCCI officials in the coming weeks, with the CoA asking BCCI’s Chief Financial Officer to give the actual figures to come to a decision. The BCCI also reopened the application process which had garnered interest from Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody and Lalchand Rajput, and have set the deadline date to be 9th July with Kumble’s successor to be decided on the 10th.
